It doesn't follow that: 〜というものではない
plain form (often 〜ば/〜たら + いい) + というものではない/というものでもない
〜(ば)いいというものではない: “it's not enough to…, just because… doesn't mean…”. Challenging an over-simple principle; でもない adds “either”.
In short
〜というものではない challenges a received idea or an over-simple line of reasoning: “just because… doesn't mean…”, “it's not enough to…”. You aren't saying it's wrong every time, but that it isn't a rule. Very often with 〜ばいい or 〜たらいい. Neutral register.
- 高ければいいというものではない。たかければいいというものではない。Just because something's expensive doesn't mean it's good.
- 練習は、長くやればいいというものでもない。れんしゅうは、ながくやればいいというものでもない。With training, it's not simply a matter of doing it for longer, either.
- お金があれば幸せになれるというものではない。おかねがあればしあわせになれるというものではない。Having money isn't enough to make you happy.
The basics
It's the negative of というものだ: instead of asserting “that's the rule”, you say “that's not the rule”. The speaker is attacking a ready-made idea, a line of reasoning like “all you need is X to get Y”.
Careful: it isn't a total negation. 高ければいいというものではない doesn't mean “expensive things are bad”, but “price doesn't guarantee quality”.
Just because something's expensive doesn't mean it's good.
- adjective
- grammatical form
- ごみは、燃やせばいいというものではない。ごみは、もやせばいいというものではない。With rubbish, it's not enough just to burn it.
How to form it
Most often, you start from a condition 〜ば(〜たら)+ いい/〜できる, then add というものではない. The variant というものでもない (with も: “not… either”) softens it or adds an argument. In speech, it shortens to ってもんじゃない.
| Form | Example | Register |
|---|---|---|
| 〜ばいいというものではない | 急げばいいというものではない | neutral |
| 〜というものでもない | 安ければ売れるというものでもない | neutral, “either” |
| 〜というものではありません | 休めば治るというものではありません | polite |
| 〜ってもんじゃない | 食べればいいってもんじゃない | casual speech |
- 安ければ売れるというものでもない。やすければうれるというものでもない。Being cheap doesn't mean it'll sell, either.
- この病気は、休めば治るというものではありません。このびょうきは、やすめばなおるというものではありません。This illness doesn't simply go away with rest.
Compare: わけではない, とは限らない, からといって
わけではない (N3) denies a conclusion someone might draw, often about yourself: 嫌いなわけではない (“it's not that I dislike it”). とは限らない (N3) is about probability: “not always”. というものではない rejects a general principle, in a life-lesson tone.
からといって (N3) announces the received idea at the start of the sentence; it combines very well with というものではない or とは限らない.
| Phrase | What's being denied |
|---|---|
| 行きたくないわけではない | a conclusion about oneself |
| 高い物がいいとは限らない | a generalisation (not always true) |
| 高ければいいというものではない | an over-simple principle (a lesson) |
| 高いからといって、いいとは限らない | the received idea stated up front |
- 日本人だからといって、敬語が上手だとは限らない。にほんじんだからといって、けいごがじょうずだとはかぎらない。Just because you're Japanese doesn't mean you've necessarily mastered keigo.
- 行きたくないわけではないが、時間がない。いきたくないわけではないが、じかんがない。It's not that I don't want to go, but I don't have time.
Common mistakes
- Reading it as a total negation: “高ければいいというものではない” doesn't say expensive things are bad.
- Forgetting the condition: the natural structure is 〜ばいい + というものではない, not “×高いいいというものではない”.
- Using it for a personal feeling: for “it's not that I dislike it”, it's わけではない.
