From the point of view of: 〜からすると・〜からいうと・〜からみると

N + からすると/からすれば ・ からいうと/からいえば ・ からみると/からみれば/からみて

N + からすると/からみると (person, clue) or からいうと (criterion): “from the point of view of…, judging by…, in terms of…”.

In short

These three constructions show where you're judging from: “from the point of view of…, judging by…, in terms of…”. からすると and からみると start from a person (their point of view) or a concrete clue; からいうと starts from a criterion (price, quality, experience), never from a person. Neutral to written register.

  • 親からすると、子どもの一人旅は心配だ。おやからすると、こどものひとりたびはしんぱいだ。From a parent's point of view, a child travelling alone is worrying.
  • 品質からいうと、このメーカーが一番だ。ひんしつからいうと、このめーかーがいちばんだ。In terms of quality, this manufacturer is the best.
  • 空の様子からみると、午後は雨になりそうだ。そらのようすからみると、ごごはあめになりそうだ。Judging by the sky, it's going to rain this afternoon.

The basics

These constructions answer the question “where are you looking from?”. You set a starting point (a person, a criterion, a clue) and give the judgement that follows from it. The three verbs (する, いう, みる) go into the と-form or the ば-form, with hardly any difference in meaning.

The sentence, piece by piece
空の様子the look of the sky
からみるとjudging by
午後はthe afternoon (topic)
雨になりそうだit'll probably rain

Judging by the sky, it's going to rain this afternoon.

Three constructions, three starting points

からすると/からすれば: the point of view of a person or a group, or a clue. からみると/からみれば/からみて: very close, with the idea of “looking”; ideal with a visible clue. からいうと/からいえば: an abstract criterion (price, quality, experience, position), not a person.

ConstructionStarting pointExample
からすると/からすればperson, group, clue親からすると
からみると/からみればperson, visible clueこの様子からみると
からいうと/からいえばcriterion, field値段からいうと

  • 安全性からいえば、新しいモデルのほうがいい。あんぜんせいからいえば、あたらしいもでるのほうがいい。In terms of safety, the new model is better.

Compare: にとって and にしたら

にとって (N3) goes with adjectives of evaluation (大切, 難しい, ありがたい): “for X, it's important”. It doesn't present a line of reasoning. にしたら (N2) imagines someone's feelings: “in their shoes, they must think…”. からすると is broader: it announces a judgement drawn from a point of view.

SentenceNuance
学生にとって、時間は大切だfor students (value)
学生にしたら、つらい話だin their shoes, it's hard (empathy)
学生からすると、この規則はおかしいfrom their point of view, the rule is absurd (judgement)

  • 店の人にしたら、閉店間際の客は困るだろう。みせのひとにしたら、へいてんまぎわのきゃくはこまるだろう。For the staff, customers who turn up just before closing must be a nuisance.

Common mistakes

  • Using からいうと with a person: “×親からいうと”; you say 親からすると or 親からみると.
  • Confusing it with からして, which takes the most obvious example to judge the whole (“just from…”).
  • Translating から as “since” or “from (a place)”: here it's “from this point of view”.
