Merely, nothing but: 〜に過ぎない
N / plain form (N without だ) + に過ぎない/に過ぎません
N / plain form + に過ぎない: “merely…, nothing more”. Downplaying, in a written, argumentative tone; in speech, you'd rather say だけだ.
In short
〜に過ぎない cuts something down to its proper, small size: “it's merely a…, nothing more than…”. The speaker downplays a fact, a figure, a status or a statement. It's the written, argumentative version of 〜だけだ.
- それは言い訳に過ぎない。それはいいわけにすぎない。That's nothing but an excuse.
- この計画は、まだ案に過ぎません。このけいかくは、まだあんにすぎません。This plan is still merely a draft.
- 説明会に来たのは、十人に過ぎなかった。せつめいかいにきたのは、じゅうにんにすぎなかった。Only ten people came to the information session.
The basics
過ぎる means “to exceed”. 〜に過ぎない, literally “not exceed X”, therefore means “it's only X, it goes no further”. The speaker reduces the scope of what they're talking about: a rumour, a modest figure, a mere employee, a plan still at the draft stage.
The tone is argumentative: you're putting things in their place, often to correct an exaggerated idea.
This plan is still merely a draft.
- noun
- other
- grammatical form
- それはうわさに過ぎない。それはうわさにすぎない。It's nothing but a rumour.
- 地球は、宇宙の小さな星の一つに過ぎない。ちきゅうは、うちゅうのちいさなほしのひとつにすぎない。The Earth is merely one small planet among many in the universe.
How to form it
に過ぎない goes directly after a noun or a plain form. With a noun or a な-adjective, no だ; in writing, you also find である. It conjugates like an adjective in ない.
| Before | Construction | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun | N + に過ぎない | うわさに過ぎない |
| Quantity | number + に過ぎない | 全体の三割に過ぎない |
| Verb | plain form + に過ぎない | 聞いてみたに過ぎない |
| Formal writing | N/な-adj + であるに過ぎない | 形式的であるに過ぎない |
| Polite / past | に過ぎません/に過ぎなかった | 十人に過ぎなかった |
- 私は思ったことを言ったに過ぎません。わたしはおもったことをいったにすぎません。I merely said what I thought.
- この工場で作る部品のうち、海外に送るのは全体の三割に過ぎない。このこうじょうでつくるぶひんのうち、かいがいにおくるのはぜんたいのさんわりにすぎない。Of the parts made at this factory, only 30% are shipped abroad.
With ただ, ほんの, 単なる
に過ぎない likes the company of shrinking words: ただの (a mere), ほんの (just a), 単なる (a simple, a mere). They reinforce the idea of “nothing more”.
The point of view remains the speaker's: objectively, ten people could be a lot; with に過ぎない, you're saying you find it few.
- これは単なる始まりに過ぎない。これはたんなるはじまりにすぎない。This is only the beginning.
- 見えているのは、問題のほんの一部に過ぎません。みえているのは、もんだいのほんのいちぶにすぎません。What we can see is only a tiny part of the problem.
Compare: だけだ, でしかない, にほかならない
だけだ says the same thing in speech, with no stylistic effect. でしかない is very close to に過ぎない, with an even stronger put-down. にほかならない does the opposite: it forcefully asserts “it's exactly this, nothing else”, to give value.
| Phrase | Effect | Register |
|---|---|---|
| うわさだけだ | it's just a rumour | spoken, neutral |
| うわさに過ぎない | it's merely a rumour (downplaying) | written, argument |
| うわさでしかない | it's no more than a rumour | written, more disparaging |
| 努力の結果にほかならない | it's precisely the result of effort | written, strong assertion |
- それはただの夢でしかない。それはただのゆめでしかない。It's no more than a dream.
- ちょっと聞いてみただけだよ。ちょっときいてみただけだよ。I was just asking, that's all. (spoken)
Common mistakes
- Translating it as “exceed” or “too much” because of 過ぎる: here it's “not exceed”, hence “merely”.
- Using it to give value: “彼の成功は努力に過ぎない” belittles his success. To give value, it's にほかならない.
- Putting だ in front: “×うわさだに過ぎない”. The noun attaches directly: うわさに過ぎない.
