It is believed that (written): 〜ものと思われる
plain form + ものと思われる/ものとみられる/ものと考えられる
Plain form + ものと思われる(みられる/考えられる): “it is believed that, it appears that”. A cautious, impersonal supposition used by the press and in reports.
In short
〜ものと思われる expresses a cautious, impersonal supposition: “it is believed that, it appears that”. It's the style of the press, reports and press releases: you give a probable conclusion without attributing it to anyone. ものとみられる is typical of TV news.
- 事故の原因は、ブレーキの故障によるものと思われる。じこのげんいんは、ぶれーきのこしょうによるものとおもわれる。The accident is believed to have been caused by brake failure.
- 犯人は、まだ市内にいるものとみられる。はんにんは、まだしないにいるものとみられる。The suspect is thought to still be in the city.
- この地域では、今後も人口が減るものと考えられる。このちいきでは、こんごもじんこうがへるものとかんがえられる。In this region, the population is expected to keep falling.
The basics
思われる is the spontaneous form of 思う: “it appears that, one is led to think that”. With もの, which turns the clause into “content”, 〜ものと思われる presents a probable conclusion objectively, with no “I”.
It's the cautious voice of English news reports: “the accident is believed to have been caused by…”, “the suspect is thought to be…”.
The accident is believed to have been caused by brake failure.
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- 工場の停電は、落雷によるものと思われる。こうじょうのていでんは、らくらいによるものとおもわれる。The power cut at the factory is believed to have been caused by lightning.
How to form it
Put a plain form before ものと. For a cause, you very often find 〜によるものと思われる. Three verbs are possible, from the most general to the most “news”: 思われる, 考えられる, みられる.
| Form | Nuance | Where? |
|---|---|---|
| ものと思われる | cautious supposition | reports, articles |
| ものと考えられる | reasoned conclusion | reports, studies |
| ものとみられる | estimate based on the evidence | press, TV news |
- この地層は、約一万年前にできたものと考えられる。このちそうは、やくいちまんねんまえにできたものとかんがえられる。This rock layer is thought to have formed about ten thousand years ago.
- 台風は、明日の朝、東海地方に近づくものとみられます。たいふうは、あしたのあさ、とうかいちほうにちかづくものとみられます。The typhoon is expected to approach the Tōkai region tomorrow morning.
Compare: と思う, ようだ, とされている
と思う is the speaker's personal opinion. ようだ (N4) relies on clues you perceive. とされている (N2) reports a view accepted by all or an official position. ものと思われる gives the likely conclusion of whoever is writing the report, but in a neutral, self-effacing tone.
| Sentence | Who's judging? |
|---|---|
| 原因はブレーキだと思う | me (personal opinion) |
| 原因はブレーキのようだ | me, from clues |
| 原因はブレーキによるものと思われる | the report, in an objective tone |
| この寺は日本で最も古いとされている | general opinion |
- たぶん、ブレーキが壊れていたんだと思う。たぶん、ぶれーきがこわれていたんだとおもう。I reckon the brakes were probably broken. (spoken)
- この寺は、名古屋で最も古いとされている。このてらは、なごやでもっともふるいとされている。This temple is regarded as the oldest in Nagoya.
Common mistakes
- Translating もの as “thing”: “the thing that is thought” makes no sense; it's “it is believed that”.
- Using it to give your opinion in speech: among friends, you say と思う.
- Confusing it with ものだ (general truth, reminiscence): here, もの only introduces the content of the supposition.
