Version française

No way to: 〜ようがない

Verb (stem) + ようがない/ようもない ; N(する)+ のしようがない

Stem + ようがない(ようもない): “there's no way to…”, blocked by the situation. With a する-noun: 〜のしようがない; before a noun: 〜ようのない.

In short

〜ようがない says there's no way, no method of doing something: “there's no way to…, nothing can be done”. It isn't will or talent that's missing; it's the situation that blocks you (no address, an object too badly damaged, facts that can't be explained). Neutral register.

  • 住所が分からないので、連絡しようがない。じゅうしょがわからないので、れんらくしようがない。I don't have their address, so there's no way to contact them.
  • ここまで壊れていては、直しようがない。ここまでこわれていては、なおしようがない。Damaged to this extent, it's beyond repair.
  • なぜ失敗したのか、説明のしようがない。なぜしっぱいしたのか、せつめいのしようがない。Why it failed, there's no way to explain.

The basics

The よう in ようがない isn't the volitional (行こう): it's the noun 様, “manner, way”. So 〜ようがない means “there's no way of…”. You note that, in this situation, no method allows you to act.

You use it when circumstances have you stuck: you don't know, you don't have the information, the object is too damaged, the thing is beyond words.

  • もう終わったことだから、今さら変えようがない。もうおわったことだから、いまさらかえようがない。It's over and done, so there's nothing we can change now.

How to form it

Verb stem + ようがない. For a する-verb built on a noun, two options: 連絡しようがない or 連絡のしようがない. ようもない reinforces it (“not the slightest way”). Before a noun, がない becomes のない: 言いようのない不安.

直す直しようがないbeyond repair
連絡する連絡しようがない/連絡のしようがないno way to get in touch
言う言いようのない + Nindescribable
助ける助けようもないnot the slightest way to help

  • 彼の作品は、文句のつけようがない。かれのさくひんは、もんくのつけようがない。His work is beyond reproach.

Compare: できない, っこない, 得ない, ようにも〜ない

できない is general (ability, permission, situation). 〜っこない (N2) is spoken and categorical: “no way, not a chance”. 得ない is about logical possibility (あり得ない). ようにも〜ない (N2) stresses a thwarted wish: “I'd love to, but it's impossible”. ようがない simply states that there's no means.

SentenceNuance
連絡できないI can't (neutral)
連絡しようがないno means exists
起きようにも起きられないI'd like to, but it's impossible
勝てっこないnot a chance (spoken)
  • 熱があって、起きようにも起きられない。ねつがあって、おきようにもおきられない。I've got a fever: I'd like to get up, but I can't.
  • あんな強いチームに、勝てっこないよ。あんなつよいちーむに、かてっこないよ。Against a team that strong, we don't stand a chance.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing it with the volitional: 直しようがない isn't built on 直そう; it's the stem 直し + よう.
  • Getting the noun version wrong: “×説明するのしようがない”; you say 説明のしようがない or 説明しようがない.
  • Using it for a lack of will: if you don't want to, it isn't ようがない, it's 〜たくない.
