Contrary to: 〜に反して

N + に反して/に反し/に反する + N/に反した + N

N (expectation, wish, rule) + に反して: “contrary to…, against…”. To contrast two comparable elements, it's に対して.

In short

〜に反して indicates that a result goes against an expectation, a wish or a rule: “contrary to…, against…”. The nouns that go with it are typical: 予想, 期待, 希望, 意志 (will), 規則, 法律. Written register, the press, reports.

  • 予想に反して、試合は日本チームが勝った。よそうにはんして、しあいはにほんちーむがかった。Against all expectations, the Japanese team won the match.
  • 本人の希望に反して、彼は東京の支社に転勤になった。ほんにんのきぼうにはんして、かれはとうきょうのししゃにてんきんになった。Against his wishes, he was transferred to the Tokyo branch.
  • 規則に反した場合は、罰金を払ってもらいます。きそくにはんしたばあいは、ばっきんをはらってもらいます。Anyone breaking the rules will be required to pay a fine.

The basics

反する means “to go against, to be contrary to”. 〜に反して presents a result that doesn't follow what was expected, what was wished for or what a rule requires. So the noun before it always expresses an expectation or a norm.

  • 大方の予想に反して、新しい工場は一年早く完成した。おおかたのよそうにはんして、あたらしいこうじょうはいちねんはやくかんせいした。Contrary to what most people predicted, the new factory was finished a year early.

How to form it

The noun attaches to に反して. に反し is more written. Before a noun, you use に反する or に反した: 規則に反する行為, 期待に反した結果.

FormExampleUse
に反して期待に反してmid-sentence
に反し予想に反し、〜written, press
に反する + N法律に反する行為before a noun
に反した + N期待に反した結果before a noun
  • これは法律に反する行為だ。これはほうりつにはんするこういだ。This is an act that breaks the law.
  • ファンの期待に反した結果になってしまった。ふぁんのきたいにはんしたけっかになってしまった。The result fell short of the fans' expectations.

Don't confuse it with に対して

に対して (N3) contrasts two comparable elements (“whereas A…, B…”) or marks the target of an action (“towards”). に反して contrasts a result with an expectation. To compare two people or two towns, it's に対して, never に反して.

SentenceRight constructionWhy
兄は背が高い/弟は低いのに対してtwo elements compared
予想/結果に反してexpectation versus reality
お客様/丁寧に話すに対してtarget (“towards”)
  • 兄は背が高いのに対して、弟は低い。あにはせがたかいのにたいして、おとうとはひくい。Whereas the older brother is tall, the younger one is short.
  • お客様に対して、丁寧に話してください。おきゃくさまにたいして、ていねいにはなしてください。Please speak politely to customers.

Common mistakes

  • Using it to compare two people: “×兄に反して、弟は…”; it's 兄に対して.
  • Putting it after a noun with no idea of expectation or rule: “×天気に反して”; you say 天気予報に反して.
  • Mixing up 反して (against an expectation) and 対して (contrast, or “towards”).
