Unless you first: 〜ないことには

Verb-ない + ことには ; Adj-い くない / N・Adj-な でない + ことには

ない-form + ことには: “unless you've first X, you can't…”. An essential condition, always followed by a negative conclusion.

In short

〜ないことには sets out an essential condition: “unless you've done X, (you can't Y)”. What follows is always negative or expresses an impossibility: 分からない, 始まらない, 何とも言えない, 決められない. Neutral register, spoken and written.

  • 実際に見ないことには、何とも言えない。じっさいにみないことには、なんともいえない。Until I've seen it with my own eyes, I can't say anything.
  • 社長の許しがないことには、話が進まない。しゃちょうのゆるしがないことには、はなしがすすまない。Without the CEO's approval, things won't move forward.
  • 体が元気でないことには、この仕事は続けられない。からだがげんきでないことには、このしごとはつづけられない。Unless you're in good health, you can't keep doing this job.

The basics

〜ないことには means “if you don't do X first”. The second part says what's then impossible. It stresses that X is a must: without it, nothing moves forward.

It's a cautious way of withholding judgement (何とも言えない) or of pointing out a necessary step (許しがないことには…).

  • データを集めないことには、問題の原因は分からない。でーたをあつめないことには、もんだいのげんいんはわからない。Until we've collected data, we can't know the cause of the problem.

How to form it

You always start from a negative form in ない. For an い-adjective: 〜くないことには; for a noun or a な-adjective: 〜でないことには. The second part is negative: 〜ない, 〜られない, 難しい, 困る.

BeforeConstructionExample
Verb〜ない + ことには見ないことには
い-adj〜くない + ことには安くないことには、売れない
な-adj〜でない + ことには元気でないことには
NounN でない + ことには本人でないことには、分からない
  • 値段がもっと安くないことには、だれも買わないだろう。ねだんがもっとやすくないことには、だれもかわないだろう。Unless the price comes down, nobody will buy it.
  • この問題は、本人でないことには分からない。このもんだいは、ほんにんでないことにはわからない。Only the person concerned can know about this.

Compare: なければ, てからでないと

なければ (N4) is the basic negative condition, with no emphasis. てからでないと (N3) stresses the order: “not before doing X”. ないことには stresses that X is indispensable, and sets up a negative conclusion.

SentenceNuance
見なければ、分からないif you don't see it, you don't know (neutral)
見てからでないと、決められないnot before seeing it (order)
見ないことには、何とも言えないseeing it is essential (emphasis)
  • 手を洗ってからでないと、食べてはいけません。てをあらってからでないと、たべてはいけません。You mustn't eat until you've washed your hands.
  • 現場を見なければ、正しい判断はできない。げんばをみなければ、ただしいはんだんはできない。Without seeing the site, you can't make a sound judgement. (neutral)

Common mistakes

  • Putting a positive follow-up: “×見ないことには、買います”. The second part states an impossibility.
  • Confusing it with ことに, which expresses an emotion (残念なことに): here, ことには always follows a ない-form.
  • Forgetting the negative in front: “×見ることには、分からない” makes no sense.
