Not only: 〜のみならず
N / plain form (N/な-adj: である) + のみならず
N / plain form (である) + のみならず: “not only…, but also…”. It's だけでなく in a very written version.
In short
〜のみならず is the very written version of だけでなく: “not only X, but also Y”. のみ is the written equivalent of だけ. You find it in articles, reports and speeches. With a noun or a な-adjective in predicate position, you go through である.
- この問題は、日本のみならず、世界中で注目されている。このもんだいは、にほんのみならず、せかいじゅうでちゅうもくされている。This issue is attracting attention not only in Japan, but all over the world.
- 彼女は優秀であるのみならず、人柄もいい。かのじょはゆうしゅうであるのみならず、ひとがらもいい。She's not only brilliant, she also has a wonderful character.
- この工場は、部品を作るのみならず、新しい技術の研究も行っている。このこうじょうは、ぶひんをつくるのみならず、あたらしいぎじゅつのけんきゅうもおこなっている。This factory doesn't just make parts: it also carries out research into new technologies.
The basics
のみ means “only” in writing (= だけ), and ならず is the written negative of なる. So 〜のみならず means “not only X”: you're announcing that a second element will broaden the statement, usually with も.
The meaning is exactly that of だけでなく; the difference is the register. のみならず belongs to writing and formal speeches — rather like English “not merely… but also”.
This issue is attracting attention not only in Japan, but all over the world.
- noun
- grammatical form
- verb
- 森林は、木材を生むのみならず、水や空気もきれいにする。しんりんは、もくざいをうむのみならず、みずやくうきもきれいにする。Forests don't just produce timber: they also clean the water and the air.
How to form it
A complement noun (place, group, field) attaches directly: 日本のみならず. When the noun or な-adjective is the predicate (“he is X”), you go through である. Verbs and い-adjectives go in the plain form. At the start of a sentence, のみならず also serves as a written conjunction: “moreover”.
| Before | Construction | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Complement noun | N + のみならず | 日本のみならず |
| Predicate noun | N である + のみならず | 社長であるのみならず |
| な-adj | な-adj である + のみならず | 優秀であるのみならず |
| Verb / い-adj | plain form + のみならず | 作るのみならず/安いのみならず |
- このソフトは、安いのみならず、使い方も簡単だ。このそふとは、やすいのみならず、つかいかたもかんたんだ。This software isn't just cheap, it's easy to use too.
- ごみの問題は、町の問題であるのみならず、国全体の問題でもある。ごみのもんだいは、まちのもんだいであるのみならず、くにぜんたいのもんだいでもある。The rubbish problem isn't only a local issue: it concerns the whole country.
A scale of registers
For “not only… but also”, Japanese has a whole range. だけでなく (N3) is the basic form. ばかりでなく and ばかりか are a little more written. はもとより presents the first element as obvious. のみならず is the most formal. At N1, you'll see にとどまらず (“not stopping at”).
| Construction | Register |
|---|---|
| 日本だけでなく | neutral, spoken and written |
| 日本ばかりでなく/ばかりか | a little more written |
| 日本はもとより | formal (obvious + addition) |
| 日本のみならず | very written |
- 日本だけでなく、外国でも売っている。にほんだけでなく、がいこくでもうっている。It's sold not only in Japan but abroad too. (neutral)
- この技術は、国内のみならず、海外の工場でも使われている。このぎじゅつは、こくないのみならず、かいがいのこうじょうでもつかわれている。This technique is used not only in Japan but also in factories abroad. (written)
Common mistakes
- Using it in conversation: in speech, you say だけでなく.
- Forgetting である when the noun is the predicate: “彼は社長のみならず…” is clumsy and ambiguous; you say 社長であるのみならず.
- Mixing up のみ on its own (“only”) and のみならず (“not only”): the meaning is reversed.
