Version française

As, in accordance with: 〜にしたがって

Verb (dictionary) / Noun + にしたがって・にしたがい

Noun + にしたがって: “in accordance with” a rule or an instruction. Verb + にしたがって: “as”. Written, formal register; にしたがい even more written.

In short

したがう means “to follow, to obey”. So 〜にしたがって has two meanings: “in accordance with” a rule, an instruction or a guide (指示にしたがって), and, like につれて, “as” for two linked developments. It's a rather written, formal form; にしたがい is even more written.

  • 係の人の指示にしたがって、ゆっくり進んでください。かかりのひとのしじにしたがって、ゆっくりすすんでください。Please follow the staff's instructions and move forward slowly.
  • 山を登るにしたがって、空気が冷たくなった。やまをのぼるにしたがって、くうきがつめたくなった。As we climbed, the air got colder.
  • 人口が増えるにしたがい、町は大きくなった。じんこうがふえるにしたがい、まちはおおきくなった。As the population grew, the town expanded.

The basics

したがう is “to follow” someone or something. In the literal sense, 〜にしたがって means acting by following a rule, an instruction, a sign: “in accordance with”. Figuratively, one development “follows” another: “as”.

  • grammatical form
  • verb
  • お寺のルールにしたがって、写真は撮らないでください。おてらのるーるにしたがって、しゃしんはとらないでください。In accordance with the temple rules, please do not take photos.

How to form it

For the meaning “follow”, use a noun (指示, ルール, 地図, 説明) + にしたがって. For the meaning “as”, a verb in the dictionary form. In written style, にしたがい replaces にしたがって.

MeaningConstructionExample
in accordance withNoun + にしたがって地図にしたがって歩く
asVerb (dictionary) + にしたがって登るにしたがって
written〜にしたがい増えるにしたがい
  • 地図にしたがって歩いたら、ちゃんと着いた。ちずにしたがってあるいたら、ちゃんとついた。I followed the map and got there without any trouble.
  • 先生のアドバイスにしたがって、毎日少しずつ書くことにした。せんせいのあどばいすにしたがって、まいにちすこしずつかくことにした。Following my teacher's advice, I've decided to write a little every day.

にしたがって or につれて?

For a development, the two are almost interchangeable; にしたがって sounds slightly more written. But for “following a rule, an instruction”, only にしたがって works: 指示につれて makes no sense.

You hear it everywhere in announcements: stations, museums, temples. It's the register of official instructions.

Sentenceにつれてにしたがって
年をとる〜、体が弱くなるyesyes
指示〜、進んでくださいnoyes
ルール〜、ごみを出すnoyes
  • 年をとるにしたがって、体が弱くなる。としをとるにしたがって、からだがよわくなる。As you get older, your body gets weaker.
  • 放送にしたがって、外に出てください。ほうそうにしたがって、そとにでてください。Please follow the announcements and leave the building.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the meaning “in accordance with”: in an announcement, 〜にしたがって almost always means “following”.
  • Replacing にしたがって with につれて before a rule or an instruction: につれて doesn't mean “obey”.
  • Using を instead of に: you follow “to” something, ルールにしたがう.
