As: 〜につれて
Verb (dictionary) / Noun of change + につれて
Verb (dictionary) or Noun of change + につれて: “as”, one gradual development brings another. The second part is an observation, never an intention.
In short
〜につれて links two developments: as the first progresses, the second follows, little by little. “As autumn deepens, the maples turn red.” Both parts describe gradual changes, and the second can't be a decision or an order.
- 秋が深まるにつれて、紅葉が赤くなっていく。あきがふかまるにつれて、もみじがあかくなっていく。As autumn deepens, the maples turn red.
- 時間がたつにつれて、悲しみも少しずつ消えていった。じかんがたつにつれて、かなしみもすこしずつきえていった。As time went by, the sadness gradually faded.
- 年をとるにつれて、昔のことをよく思い出すようになった。としをとるにつれて、むかしのことをよくおもいだすようになった。As I've got older, I've come to think back on the past a lot.
The basics
つれる means “to take along”. 〜につれて: the first development “takes the second along”. When one progresses, the other progresses too, at the same pace. It's English “as”, “the more…, the more…”, or “along with”.
As autumn deepens, the maples turn red.

How to form it
After a verb in the dictionary form, or after a noun that itself expresses a change (変化, 成長, 時代の変化). At the end of a written clause, you also find につれ. The second part is often in the form 〜ていく, 〜てくる, 〜ようになる, which show a development.
| Construction | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Verb (dictionary) + につれて | 時間がたつにつれて | as time goes by |
| Noun of change + につれて | 時代の変化につれて | as the times change |
| 〜につれ (written) | 子どもが大きくなるにつれ | as the child grows |
- 子どもの成長につれて、家が小さく感じるようになった。こどものせいちょうにつれて、いえがちいさくかんじるようになった。As the children grew, the house started to feel smaller.
The limits: gradual and involuntary
The first change has to be gradual: “getting older”, “advancing”, “increasing”. A one-off event (“starting university”, “getting married”) won't do. The second part is an observation, never an intention: no 〜ましょう, 〜てください, 〜つもりだ.
- 日本語が上手になるにつれて、日本の生活が楽しくなってきた。にほんごがじょうずになるにつれて、にほんのせいかつがたのしくなってきた。As my Japanese improved, life in Japan became more enjoyable.
- 町が大きくなるにつれて、人も増えていった。まちがおおきくなるにつれて、ひともふえていった。As the town grew, so did the population.
Its neighbours: にしたがって, とともに, ば〜ほど
にしたがって has the same meaning of development, slightly more written, and can also mean “to follow a rule”. とともに also expresses parallel development, in a formal style. ば〜ほど (“the more…, the more…”) stresses proportion.
| Form | Nuance | Example |
|---|---|---|
| につれて | one development brings another | 年をとるにつれて |
| にしたがって | same, more written; also “follow” | 年をとるにしたがって |
| とともに | parallel development, formal | 年をとるとともに |
| ば〜ほど | the more…, the more… | 年をとればとるほど |
- 考えれば考えるほど、わからなくなる。かんがえればかんがえるほど、わからなくなる。The more I think about it, the less I understand.
Common mistakes
- Using it with a one-off change: “大学に入るにつれて” doesn't work; starting university happens in one go.
- Ending with an intention or an invitation: 〜につれて、引っ越しましょう is impossible.
- Putting the verb in the た- or て-form: it's always the dictionary form (たつにつれて).
