How to form it
Group 2: る → ない. Group 1: the last syllable becomes “a”, then ない; verbs ending in う become わない. Group 3: しない, こない.
| Group | Dictionary | ない-form |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 書く・飲む・待つ | 書かない・飲まない・待たない |
| 1 (ending in う) | 買う・会う | 買わない・会わない |
| 2 | 食べる・見る | 食べない・見ない |
| 3 | する・くる | しない・こない |
| exception | ある | ない |
In the past and in practice
In the past: ない → なかった (食べなかった, I didn't eat). To stay polite, you add です: 食べないです is common in speech, but the standard polite form is still 食べません.
- きょうは 何も 食べない。kyō wa nani mo tabenaiI'm not eating anything today. (casual)
- きのうは 学校へ 行かなかった。kinō wa gakkō e ikanakattaI didn't go to school yesterday. (casual)
Common mistakes
- Saying かあない for 買う: verbs ending in う become わない (買わない).
- Saying あらない: the ない-form of ある is ない.
- Saying くない for くる: it's こない.
