It's not hard to: 〜に難くない

名詞・動詞辞書形 + に難くない

想像・察する・理解・予想 + に難くない = “one can easily imagine, guess, understand”. Read かたくない, written register.

In short

X に難くない means “it isn't difficult to X”, hence “one can easily X”. The construction is used with a handful of verbs of thought: 想像する, 察する, 理解する, 予想する, 推察する. It's used to say a consequence or a feeling is easy to guess. Careful with the reading: 難く is read かたく. Written register, analysis, editorials.

  • 被災者の苦しみは想像に難くない。ひさいしゃのくるしみはそうぞうにかたくない。It's not hard to imagine the disaster victims' suffering.
  • 彼が反対した理由は、察するに難くない。かれがはんたいしたりゆうは、さっするにかたくない。It's easy to guess why he objected.
  • この政策が若者の反発を招くことは、予想に難くない。このせいさくがわかもののはんぱつをまねくことは、よそうにかたくない。It's not hard to predict that this policy will provoke a backlash among young people.

The basics

難い (かたい) is a written word for “difficult”. 難くない = “not difficult”. X に難くない = “X isn't difficult”, so “one easily X's”. It's an elegant double negative — rather like English “it's not hard to imagine”: instead of saying “one easily imagines”, you say “it isn't difficult to imagine”.

The written register

The construction belongs to articles, essays and speeches. In everyday speech, you simply say 簡単に想像できる or 想像がつく. In a text, に難くない gives a composed, analytical tone.

に難くない, やすい, に違いない, がたい

やすい (“easy to”) is used with almost any verb (読みやすい). に違いない expresses certainty, not ease of imagining. がたい (“hard to”) is the opposite of に難くない: 理解しがたい = hard to understand.

Common mistakes

  • Reading 難くない as “むずかしくない”: in this construction, it's “かたくない”.
  • Using it with any verb: “読むに難くない” is wrong; you say 読みやすい.
  • Taking it for a negative: に難くない means “easy”, not “impossible”.
