Beyond words: 〜といったらない

名詞・い形容詞 + といったらない/ったらない

Noun or adjective + といったらない = “as X as can be, beyond words”: the speaker's intense emotion. Spoken: ったらない, ったらありゃしない.

In short

X といったらない: “it's indescribably X, as X as can be”; words fail to describe the intensity. The speaker expresses their own emotion, often with a noun in さ (悔しさ, 美しさ) or an adjective. The emotion can be negative or positive. In casual speech: ったらない, and to complain, ったらありゃしない. Expressive spoken register and narrative.

  • 試合に負けた時の悔しさといったらなかった。しあいにまけたときのくやしさといったらなかった。When we lost the match, I was beside myself with frustration.
  • 朝の満員電車の混雑ぶりといったらない。あさのまんいんでんしゃのこんざつぶりといったらない。The crush on packed morning trains is beyond words.
  • 赤ちゃんの寝顔のかわいいことといったらない。あかちゃんのねがおのかわいいことといったらない。A sleeping baby's face is unbelievably cute.

The basics

Literally: “if you talk about X, there are no (words)”. The speaker gives up trying to describe it: it's too much. The construction conveys a strong emotion, personally experienced: anger, fear, joy, wonder — like English “words can't describe”, “unbelievably…”.

How to form it

といったらない follows a noun (often one in さ or ぶり) or an い-adjective. With an adjective, こと is readily added: かわいいことといったらない. In the past, the negative carries the marker: といったらなかった.

BeforeConstructionExample
noun in さnoun + といったらない寒さといったらない
い-adjectiveadj. + といったらないうるさいといったらない
adjective + こと〜ことといったらないかわいいことといったらない
spoken〜ったらない眠いったらない
spoken, complaint〜ったらありゃしないうるさいったらありゃしない
  • 徹夜明けの授業は、眠いったらない。てつやあけのじゅぎょうは、ねむいったらない。A class after an all-nighter — you're so sleepy!

Usually negative, but not always

The construction is used a lot to complain (うるさい, 寒い, 面倒). But it also expresses joy or wonder (うれしさ, 美しさ, かわいさ). Only the variant ありゃしない is clearly negative and casual.

  • うちの犬ときたら、いたずらばかりで面倒くさいったらありゃしない。うちのいぬときたら、いたずらばかりでめんどうくさいったらありゃしない。Our dog does nothing but get up to mischief — what a pain!

といったらない, 極まりない, てたまらない

極まりない is written and critical, after a な-adjective. てたまらない expresses a sensation you can't bear any longer, felt personally. といったらない is more expressive and spoken: you stress that there are no words.

FormRegisterExample
〜といったらないexpressive speech, narrative悔しさといったらない
〜極まりないwritten, critical失礼極まりない
〜てたまらないeveryday, sensation悔しくてたまらない
  • 負けたのが悔しくてたまらない。まけたのがくやしくてたまらない。I lost, and it's eating me up.

Common mistakes

  • Reading ない as a real negative: “寒さといったらない” means it's terribly cold.
  • Using ったらありゃしない in a formal context: it's very casual.
  • Thinking it's always negative: うれしさといったらない expresses immense joy.
