名詞 + の極み

Noun + の極み = “the height, the epitome of X”, positive or negative (ぜいたくの極み, 痛恨の極み). Formal register.

In short

X の極み refers to the highest degree of X, its peak. It's used with nouns, positive or negative: ぜいたくの極み (the height of luxury), 美の極み, 洗練の極み, 痛恨の極み (the bitterest regret), 疲労の極み (utter exhaustion). Formal, written register: speeches, reviews, sports commentary.

  • 一流シェフの料理を自宅で味わうなんて、ぜいたくの極みだ。いちりゅうシェフのりょうりをじたくであじわうなんて、ぜいたくのきわみだ。Enjoying a top chef's cooking at home — that's the height of luxury.
  • 最後の最後で逆転負けを喫したのは、痛恨の極みです。さいごのさいごでぎゃくてんまけをきっしたのは、つうこんのきわみです。Being overtaken at the very last moment is the bitterest of regrets.
  • 三日間ほとんど眠らず、疲労の極みに達していた。みっかかんほとんどねむらず、ひろうのきわみにたっしていた。After three days with almost no sleep, I'd reached utter exhaustion.

The basics

極み is the noun from 極める (“to take to the limit”). X の極み = “the extreme point of X”. It can be used for an admirable summit (美, 洗練, ぜいたく) as well as a depth (痛恨, 疲労, 無責任).

  • この料理はぜいたくの極みだ。このりょうりはぜいたくのきわみだ。This dish is the height of luxury.
  • この庭園は、日本の美意識の極みと言えるだろう。このていえんは、にほんのびいしきのきわみといえるだろう。This garden is surely the epitome of the Japanese aesthetic sense.

How to form it

の極み always follows a noun (often Sino-Japanese). You find it at the end of a sentence (〜の極みだ), with a verb (〜の極みに達する) or before a noun.

ConstructionExampleMeaning
noun + の極みだぜいたくの極みだit's the height of luxury
noun + の極みに達する疲労の極みに達するreach utter exhaustion
noun + の極みと言える洗練の極みと言えるyou could call it the epitome
× adjective + の極み× 美しいの極みyou need a noun: 美の極み
  • 国民の不安を放置するとは、無責任の極みだ。こくみんのふあんをほうちするとは、むせきにんのきわみだ。Ignoring the public's anxiety is the height of irresponsibility.

Positive or negative

Unlike 極まりない, which is almost always critical, の極み works both ways. The tone is formal: you find it in speeches (痛恨の極みでございます), editorials, art and sports commentary.

  • 多くの犠牲者を出したことは、痛恨の極みでございます。おおくのぎせいしゃをだしたことは、つうこんのきわみでございます。That there should be so many victims is a source of the deepest regret.

の極み, の至り, 極まりない, この上ない

の至り is limited to a few formulas of polite emotion (光栄の至り). 極まりない follows a な-adjective and criticises. この上ない is used with an adjective or a noun, positive or negative. の極み follows a noun and refers to a peak, admirable or terrible.

FormBeforeExample
〜の極みnoun + のぜいたくの極み, 痛恨の極み
〜の至りa few fixed nouns光栄の至り
〜極まりないな-adj. stem失礼極まりない
〜この上ないadjective, nounこの上ない喜び
  • 皆様にお祝いしていただき、この上ない喜びです。みなさまにおいわいしていただき、このうえないよろこびです。Being congratulated by you all is the greatest of joys.

Common mistakes

  • Attaching の極み to an adjective: you need a noun (美の極み, not “美しいの極み”).
  • Confusing it with の至り: 光栄の至り is a fixed formula; の極み is used more freely.
  • Thinking it's always positive: 痛恨の極み, 疲労の極み are very common.
