Worthy of: 〜に足る/〜に足りない

動詞辞書形・名詞 + に足る/に足りない(に足らない)

X に足る = “worthy of X” (信頼に足る人物); X に足りない/足らない = not worth X; 取るに足りない = trivial. Written register.

In short

X に足る Y: “Y that has enough value to deserve X”. 信頼するに足る人物 = a trustworthy person. In the negative, に足りない (or に足らない): “doesn't deserve X, isn't worth it”. Two negative expressions are fixed: 取るに足りない (trivial) and 恐れるに足りない (nothing to fear). Written register.

  • 彼は信頼するに足る人物だ。かれはしんらいするにたるじんぶつだ。He's a person worthy of trust.
  • そんなことは、取るに足りない問題だ。そんなことは、とるにたりないもんだいだ。That's a trivial problem.
  • 相手チームは恐れるに足らない。あいてチームはおそれるにたらない。The opposing team is nothing to be afraid of.

The basics

足る is the classical form of 足りる (“to be enough”). X に足る = “enough for X”, so “that deserves X”. You're assessing the value of something or someone: is it solid enough, serious enough, worthy enough to be believed, respected, relied upon?

How to form it

に足る follows a dictionary-form verb or an action noun (信頼, 尊敬, 満足). It most often describes a noun. In the negative, に足りない and に足らない are interchangeable.

ConstructionExampleMeaning
verb + に足る + noun信頼するに足る人物trustworthy
noun + に足る尊敬に足る行いworthy of respect
〜に足りない/足らない論じるに足りないnot worth discussing
fixed取るに足りないtrivial
fixed恐れるに足りないnothing to fear
  • その意見は、議論するに足らないと判断された。そのいけんは、ぎろんするにたらないとはんだんされた。That view was judged not worth debating.

The fixed negatives

取るに足りない (“not worth picking up”) means “trivial, negligible”. 恐れるに足りない: “nothing to fear”. These two expressions are very common, even in formal speech.

  • 取るに足りないミスで、そんなに落ち込むことはない。とるにたりないミスで、そんなにおちこむことはない。No need to beat yourself up over such a trivial mistake.

に足る, に値する, にたえる, べき

に値する (“to be worth”) is very close and slightly more neutral (注目に値する). にたえる stresses the ability to stand up to scrutiny (鑑賞にたえる). べき says what should be done, without assessing value. に足る assesses whether the value is sufficient.

FormNuanceExample
〜に足るsufficient value信頼に足る
〜に値するdeserves, is worth注目に値する
〜にたえるstands up to scrutiny鑑賞にたえる
〜べきduty信頼すべき人
  • 彼の挑戦は、称賛に値する。かれのちょうせんは、しょうさんにあたいする。His attempt deserves praise.

Common mistakes

  • Modernising the affirmative: the established form is に足る (信頼に足る); “信頼に足りる” does occur, but sounds less formal.
  • Taking 取るに足りない literally (“not enough to pick up”): the meaning is “trivial”.
  • Confusing it with べき: に足る assesses value, べき imposes a duty.
