With such an asset: 〜をもってすれば/〜をもってしても

名詞 + をもってすれば/をもってしても

Noun + をもってすれば: “with such an asset, it's possible”. Noun + をもってしても: “even with such an asset, it's impossible”. Written register, for praise or an acknowledged failure.

In short

These two expressions weigh up the strength of an exceptional asset (a talent, a technology, a power). 〜をもってすれば: “with such an asset, it can be done” (彼の技術をもってすれば簡単だ). 〜をもってしても: “even with such an asset, it's impossible” (最新の科学をもってしても解明できない). Written register, for praising or for acknowledging a failure.

  • 彼の技術をもってすれば、この程度の修理は一日で終わるだろう。かれのぎじゅつをもってすれば、このていどのしゅうりはいちにちでおわるだろう。With his skill, a repair like this will be done in a day.
  • 最新の科学をもってしても、この病気の原因は解明できていない。さいしんのかがくをもってしても、このびょうきのげんいんはかいめいできていない。Even the most advanced science hasn't managed to uncover the cause of this disease.
  • 彼女の実力をもってすれば、優勝も夢ではない。かのじょのじつりょくをもってすれば、ゆうしょうもゆめではない。With her ability, winning the title is no mere dream.

The basics

をもって means “by means of”. すれば adds a hypothesis (“if you use it”), しても a concession (“even if you use it”). The result is two mirror-image expressions — rather like English “armed with…” and “for all…”.

The noun before it is always a powerful asset: talent, skill, technology, financial muscle, collective intelligence. It's this strength that's being highlighted, either to say that anything becomes possible, or to stress that a problem is beyond even it.

The sentence, piece by piece
最新の科学the most advanced science
をもってしてもeven making use of
原因はthe cause (topic)
解明できていないhasn't been uncovered

Even the most advanced science hasn't managed to uncover the cause.

  • verb
  • このチームの総合力をもってすれば、決勝進出は確実だ。このちーむのそうごうりょくをもってすれば、けっしょうしんしゅつはかくじつだ。With this team's combined strength, reaching the final is a certainty.
  • 彼の説得力をもってしても、住民の反対は止められなかった。かれのせっとくりょくをもってしても、じゅうみんのはんたいはとめられなかった。For all his powers of persuasion, he couldn't stop the residents' opposition.

How to form it

Noun + をもってすれば, followed by a possibility (できる, 難しくない, 夢ではない). Noun + をもってしても, followed by an impossibility (〜ない, 難しい, 届かない).

FormMeaningWhat follows
〜をもってすればwith this assetpossible, easy, within reach
〜をもってしてもeven with this assetimpossible, difficult, failure
  • 現在の技術をもってすれば、月に住むことも夢ではない。げんざいのぎじゅつをもってすれば、つきにすむこともゆめではない。With today's technology, living on the Moon is no longer a dream.

Differences from をもって, なら, でも

〜をもって (N1) on its own marks an official means or an end date: 書面をもって通知する, 本日をもって終了. It isn't a judgement about an asset.

〜なら and 〜でも express the same logic in speech: 彼の技術なら簡単だ, 最新の科学でも分からない. をもってすれば / をもってしても are more solemn and highlight how great the asset is.

  • 本日をもって、当店は閉店いたします。ほんじつをもって、とうてんはへいてんいたします。As of today, our shop is closing for good.
  • 彼の技術なら、簡単に直せるよ。かれのぎじゅつなら、かんたんになおせるよ。With his skill, he'll fix it in no time. (spoken)

Common mistakes

  • Swapping what follows: をもってすれば announces success, をもってしても failure. “×最新の科学をもってすれば、解明できない” is self-contradictory.
  • Using it with an ordinary object: “×このはさみをもってすれば” sounds ridiculous. It needs a remarkable asset.
  • Confusing it with をもって (end date, official means).
