Named after, in honour of: 〜にちなんで

N + にちなんで/にちなみ/にちなんだ + N

N + にちなんで: naming, creating or organising something in reference to N (“after, in honour of”). Before a noun: にちなんだ. Written register.

In short

〜にちなんで says that you name, create or organise something in connection with an event, a person, a place or a date: “after”, “in reference to”, “in honour of”. Very common for explaining the origin of a name, a festival, a product. Written register: articles, presentations, signs; にちなみ is even more written.

  • 祖父の名前にちなんで、息子を「大地」と名付けた。そふのなまえにちなんで、むすこを「だいち」となづけた。We named our son Daichi, after his grandfather's name.
  • 地元の祭りにちなんだお菓子が売られている。じもとのまつりにちなんだおかしがうられている。They're selling sweets inspired by the local festival.
  • 名古屋城の金のしゃちほこにちなんだお土産が人気だ。なごやじょうのきんのしゃちほこにちなんだおみやげがにんきだ。Souvenirs inspired by the golden shachihoko of Nagoya Castle are very popular.

The basics

ちなむ means “to be connected with, to relate to”. So 〜にちなんで presents the origin or source of inspiration of something: a name, a festival, a product, a decoration. You're explaining “where it comes from”.

The sentence, piece by piece

名付けたnamed

  • noun
  • grammatical form
  • verb
  • 二月二十二日は、猫の鳴き声にちなんで「猫の日」と呼ばれている。にがつにじゅうににちは、ねこのなきごえにちなんで「ねこのひ」とよばれている。22 February is called “Cat Day”, after the sound of a cat's miaow (nyan nyan nyan).

How to form it

にちなんで follows a noun directly. Before a noun, you use にちなんだ; in very written text, the continuative form にちなみ.

FormUseExample
N にちなんで + verbdo… after N祖父の名前にちなんで名付ける
N にちなんだ + Na… inspired by N祭りにちなんだお菓子
N にちなみ、…written form開港百年にちなみ、切手を発行
  • この通りは、昔ここにあった市場にちなんで「市場通り」と呼ばれている。このとおりは、むかしここにあったいちばにちなんで「いちばどおり」とよばれている。This street is called “Market Street”, after the market that used to stand here.
  • 七夕にちなんだメニューを用意しました。たなばたにちなんだめにゅーをよういしました。We've prepared a special Tanabata menu.

What you do “in connection with”

What follows is almost always about naming (名付ける, 呼ぶ), creating (作る, 発行する) or organising (開く, 行う). It isn't a cause: you don't say ×雨にちなんで試合が中止になった. For a cause, you need で, ため or によって.

  • 大雨のため、試合は中止になった。おおあめのため、しあいはちゅうしになった。The match was cancelled because of heavy rain.

にちなんで, をもとに, に合わせて, に沿って

をもとに marks a material or concrete basis (a true story, data) that you build on. に合わせて makes something coincide with a date or adapts to something. に沿って follows a line, a plan or a rule. にちなんで only evokes an origin, a symbolic link.

FormIdeaExample
〜にちなんでin reference to (symbolic link)祖父にちなんで名付ける
〜をもとにbased on (material)実話をもとにした映画
〜に合わせてto coincide with, adapted to開店に合わせてセールを行う
〜に沿ってalong, in line with川に沿って歩く
  • これは実話をもとにした映画だ。これはじつわをもとにしたえいがだ。This is a film based on a true story.

Common mistakes

  • Using it for a cause: ×雨にちなんで中止. It's a symbolic link, not a reason.
  • Confusing it with に沿って (“along, in line with”) because both end in んで/って.
  • Forgetting the form にちなんだ before a noun: 祭りにちなんだお菓子, not ×祭りにちなんでお菓子.
