When it comes to: 〜にかけては
N + にかけては/にかけても
N + にかけては: “when it comes to N”, followed by praise (nobody beats them, I'm confident). Not to be confused with から〜にかけて (extent).
In short
〜にかけては presents a field, then asserts that someone excels in it: “when it comes to X, nobody beats them”. The second part is almost always praise or pride: 誰にも負けない, 右に出る者はいない, 自信がある. にかけても means “even when it comes to”. Neutral register.
- 料理にかけては、父は誰にも負けない。りょうりにかけては、ちちはだれにもまけない。When it comes to cooking, my father is second to none.
- 足の速さにかけては、クラスで彼女が一番だ。あしのはやさにかけては、くらすでかのじょがいちばんだ。When it comes to running speed, she's the best in the class.
- 名古屋の喫茶店にかけては、田中さんほど詳しい人はいない。なごやのきっさてんにかけては、たなかさんほどくわしいひとはいない。When it comes to Nagoya's cafés, nobody knows as much as Mr Tanaka.
The basics
〜にかけては puts a field in the spotlight, as if to say “if there's one area where…, it's this one”. What follows asserts someone's superiority in that field. You use it to compliment someone or to talk about what you're proud of.
When it comes to cooking, my father is second to none.
- noun
- grammatical form
- other
- verb
- 日本の古い映画にかけては、祖父は本当に詳しい。にほんのふるいえいがにかけては、そふはほんとうにくわしい。When it comes to old Japanese films, my grandfather really knows his stuff.
How to form it
にかけては follows a noun directly: an activity (料理, ダンス), a quality (速さ, 粘り強さ) or a body of knowledge. The second part often uses set phrases.
| Form | Typical follow-up | Example |
|---|---|---|
| N にかけては | 誰にも負けない | 料理にかけては誰にも負けない |
| N にかけては | 右に出る者はいない | 計算にかけては彼の右に出る者はいない |
| N にかけては | 自信がある | 体力にかけては自信がある |
| N にかけても | even when it comes to… | 英語にかけても一流だ |
- 体力にかけては、誰にも負けない自信があります。たいりょくにかけては、だれにもまけないじしんがあります。When it comes to stamina, I'm confident I can hold my own against anyone.
- 彼女は歌がうまいが、ピアノにかけても一流だ。かのじょはうたがうまいが、ぴあのにかけてもいちりゅうだ。She sings well, and even when it comes to the piano, she's first-rate.
A follow-up that's always flattering
The second part assesses a skill, and almost always favourably. For a neutral topic (the weather, a file), you don't use にかけては: ×天気にかけては. In a job interview, 〜にかけては自信があります is a natural way to highlight a strength without sounding arrogant.
- スピードは遅いが、正確さにかけては、この機械が一番だ。すぴーどはおそいが、せいかくさにかけては、このきかいがいちばんだ。It's slow, but when it comes to accuracy, this machine is the best.
にかけては, については, から〜にかけて
については (N3) simply introduces the topic under discussion, with no judgement. では sets a frame of comparison (日本では). Finally, から〜にかけて (line 3) indicates an expanse in time or space (“from… to…”): same verb, but without は and with a completely different meaning.
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| N にかけては | when it comes to (excellence) | 数学にかけては一番だ |
| N については | about (neutral) | 数学については後で話す |
| A から B にかけて | from A to B (expanse) | 三月から五月にかけて |
- 東海地方では、今夜から明日の朝にかけて雨が降るでしょう。とうかいちほうでは、こんやからあしたのあさにかけてあめがふるでしょう。In the Tōkai region, rain is expected from tonight into tomorrow morning.
Common mistakes
- Mixing it up with から〜にかけて (“from… to…”): にかけては (with は) is about skill, not extent.
- Using it for a neutral topic: what follows must praise a skill.
- Translating it as “to bet on” because of the verb かける: here it means “when it comes to”.
