Pretending or looking like?
ようだ, みたいだ and そうだ describe an appearance you observe, with no intention behind it: 寝ているようだ, “it looks like he's asleep”. ふりをする describes a deliberate, false appearance: 寝ているふりをしている, “he's pretending to be asleep”. In English too, “look as if” and “pretend” aren't interchangeable.
| Sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 寝ているようだ | it looks like he's asleep (may be true) |
| 寝ているふりをしている | he's pretending to be asleep (it's false) |
- 部屋の電気が消えている。もう寝ているようだ。へやのでんきがきえている。もうねているようだ。The light in his room is off. It looks like he's already asleep.
Common mistakes
- Putting の after a verb or an い-adjective: 「わからないのふり」 is wrong; it's わからないふり.
- Forgetting な or の: 「元気ふり」, 「学生ふり」 are wrong; say 元気なふり, 学生のふり.
- Using ふり for a mere appearance: when nothing is intended, it's ようだ or みたいだ.
