Thanks to: 〜おかげで

plain form (な-adj + な / Noun + の) + おかげで / おかげだ

Plain form (な-adj + な, Noun + の) + おかげで / おかげだ: “thanks to”, the cause of a positive result you're grateful for. For blame, it's せいで.

In short

〜おかげで presents a cause with a positive result, with a note of gratitude: 先生のおかげで合格できた, “it's thanks to my teacher that I passed”. At the end of a sentence, say 〜おかげだ. The phrase おかげさまで is a polite answer to “how are you?”.

  • 先生のおかげで、試験に合格できました。せんせいのおかげで、しけんにごうかくできました。It's thanks to you, Professor, that I passed the exam.
  • 天気がよかったおかげで、山がきれいに見えた。てんきがよかったおかげで、やまがきれいにみえた。Thanks to the good weather, we had a clear view of the mountain.
  • 元気になったのは、この薬のおかげだ。げんきになったのは、このくすりのおかげだ。It's thanks to this medicine that I've recovered.

The basics

おかげ comes from a word for the protective shadow of the gods. It keeps that idea: something or someone has helped us, and we're grateful. 〜おかげで therefore introduces a cause, but always seen as a blessing.

How to form it

おかげ is a noun: it attaches like a noun. It's used with で in the middle of a sentence, or with だ / です at the end.

  • うまくいったのは、みなさんのおかげです。うまくいったのは、みなさんのおかげです。It's thanks to all of you that everything went well.

おかげさまで, and ironic use

おかげさまで is a very common polite phrase: you answer 「おかげさまで、元気です」 even if the person had nothing to do with it. You're thanking, in a way, everything around you.

Conversely, おかげで can be ironic when the result is bad: 「君のおかげで、全部やり直しだよ」 (“thanks to you, it all has to be redone”). It's the same sarcasm as English “thanks a lot”.

  • おかげさまで、店は今年で十年になります。おかげさまで、みせはことしでじゅうねんになります。Thanks to all of you, the shop is celebrating its tenth year.
  • 君がしゃべったおかげで、計画がみんなにばれたよ。きみがしゃべったおかげで、けいかくがみんなにばれたよ。Thanks to you blabbing, everyone knows about the plan. (ironic)

おかげで, せいで, ので

おかげで: cause + positive result (gratitude). せいで (next point): cause + negative result (blame). ので and から: neutral cause, no judgement.

FormResultFeeling
〜おかげでpositivegratitude
〜せいでnegativeblame
〜ので / 〜からanyneutral
  • 雨が降ったので、試合は中止になった。あめがふったので、しあいはちゅうしになった。Because it rained, the match was cancelled. (plain statement)

Common mistakes

  • Using it for a neutral cause: 「雨のおかげで中止になった」 sounds ironic; say 雨で or 雨のため instead.
  • Forgetting の after a noun: 先生おかげで is wrong; it's 先生のおかげで.
  • Taking おかげさまで literally: it's a polite set phrase, not a real thank-you to the person.
