Because of (blame): 〜せいで

plain form (な-adj + な / Noun + の) + せいで / せいだ / せいか

Plain form (な-adj + な, Noun + の) + せいで / せいだ: “because of”, the cause of a negative result you're blaming. せいか: “perhaps because of”.

In short

〜せいで presents a cause with a bad result, pointing at a culprit: 雨のせいで中止になった, “it was cancelled because of the rain”. At the end of a sentence: 〜せいだ (“it's the fault of”). 〜せいか adds doubt: “perhaps because of”.

  • 雨のせいで、お祭りが中止になった。あめのせいで、おまつりがちゅうしになった。The festival was cancelled because of the rain.
  • 寝る前にコーヒーを飲んだせいで、眠れなかった。ねるまえにこーひーをのんだせいで、ねむれなかった。I drank coffee before bed, so I couldn't sleep.
  • 疲れているせいか、今日は頭が痛い。つかれているせいか、きょうはあたまがいたい。Maybe it's because I'm tired, but I've got a headache today.

The basics

せい means “fault”. 〜せいで therefore points to what's responsible for a negative result: a person, a thing, a situation. It's the exact opposite of おかげで: same construction, opposite feeling — English “because of”, “it's the fault of”.

The sentence, piece by piece
雨のof the rain
せいでbecause of (blame)
お祭りがthe festival (subject)
中止になったwas cancelled

The festival was cancelled because of the rain.

  • noun
  • grammatical form
  • verb
  • 道が混んでいたせいで、一時間も遅れた。みちがこんでいたせいで、いちじかんもおくれた。Because of the traffic jams, I was a whole hour late.
  • 人のせいにしないで。ひとのせいにしないで。Don't blame it on other people.

How to form it

Like おかげ, せい is a noun. Three endings: せいで (mid-sentence), せいだ (“it's the fault of”), せいか (“perhaps because of”). Also remember 〜のせいにする: to blame something on.

FormMeaningExample
〜せいでbecause of雪のせいで電車が止まった
〜せいだit's the fault of失敗したのは私のせいだ
〜せいかperhaps because of年のせいか、疲れやすい
〜のせいにするto blame on弟のせいにする
  • 風邪をひいたのは、薄着のせいだ。かぜをひいたのは、うすぎのせいだ。I caught a cold because I wasn't wrapped up warmly enough.
  • 秋のせいか、なんだか寂しい。あきのせいか、なんだかさびしい。Maybe it's the autumn, but I feel a bit sad.

おかげで, せいで, ために

All three introduce a cause, but from a different angle. おかげで thanks, せいで accuses, ために (next point) states neutrally and rather formally.

おかげで with a bad result becomes ironic: 「君のおかげで遅れたよ」 (“thanks a lot, now we're late!”). It's a mocking way of saying 君のせいで.

SentenceTone
雪のおかげで、スキーができたgratitude
雪のせいで、電車が止まったblame, regret
雪のため、電車が止まっておりますneutral statement (announcement)
  • 大雪のため、本日は休みとなります。おおゆきのため、ほんじつはやすみとなります。Due to heavy snow, we are closed today.

Common mistakes

  • Using せいで for a good result: 「先生のせいで合格した」 is absurd; it's おかげで.
  • Missing the irony: 「おかげで遅れた」 isn't a thank-you but a mocking reproach.
  • Using せいで in an official announcement: it points at a culprit; in neutral writing, ため is preferred.
