Rather than: 〜というより
plain form / Noun + というより(むしろ)
A というより B: “it's not really A, it's more B”; you correct a description. Reinforced by むしろ.
In short
〜というより corrects a description: “rather than…, it's more…”. 涼しいというより寒い: “it's not cool, it's downright cold”. You take a word that doesn't quite fit, and offer a more accurate one.
- 今日は涼しいというより寒い。きょうはすずしいというよりさむい。It's not cool today, it's downright cold.
- 彼は友達というより、家族のような存在だ。かれはともだちというより、かぞくのようなそんざいだ。He's less a friend than a member of the family.
- この町は静かというより、寂しい感じがする。このまちはしずかというより、さびしいかんじがする。This town feels less quiet than lonely and empty.
The basics
という (“what you'd call”) + より (“more than”): “more than what you'd call A, it's B”. A is a word you've just said or that comes to mind, but doesn't describe reality well. B is the right word — English “more B than A”, “not so much A as B”.
むしろ (“if anything, rather”) often reinforces the second part.
It's not cool today, it's downright cold.
- noun
- adjective
- grammatical form
- 彼の話は、説明というより言い訳だった。かれのはなしは、せつめいというよりいいわけだった。What he said was less an explanation than an excuse.
How to form it
A can be a noun, an adjective or a verb in the plain form. After a noun or a な-adjective, だ generally disappears (静かというより). B follows directly.
| Type of A | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| noun | Noun + というより | 先生というより友達 |
| い-adjective | 〜い + というより | 涼しいというより寒い |
| な-adjective | 〜 + というより | 静かというより寂しい |
| verb | plain form + というより | 歩くというより走っている |
| reinforced | 〜というより、むしろ〜 | というより、むしろ楽しい |
- 彼は歩くというより、ほとんど走っていた。かれはあるくというより、ほとんどはしっていた。He wasn't walking, he was almost running.
- この仕事は大変というより、むしろ楽しい。このしごとはたいへんというより、むしろたのしい。This job is more fun than hard, actually.
というより or より?
A より B (N5) compares two different things: コーヒーより紅茶が好き, “I prefer tea to coffee”. A というより B describes ONE single thing, swapping one word for a more accurate one: the thing isn't really A, it's more B.
In speech, というか works the same way, more casually: 好きというか、尊敬してる.
- 京都は町というより、大きな博物館みたいだ。きょうとはまちというより、おおきなはくぶつかんみたいだ。Kyoto is less a city than a huge museum.
- コーヒーより紅茶のほうが好きだ。こーひーよりこうちゃのほうがすきだ。I prefer tea to coffee. (comparing two things)
Common mistakes
- Reversing the order: the rejected word comes BEFORE というより, the right word AFTER (涼しいというより寒い = it's cold).
- Mixing it up with the より that compares two separate things.
- Keeping だ after a noun or a な-adjective: you say 静かというより, rather than “静かだというより”.
