The necessary condition: the ば-form
Verb: -u → -eba(行けば); い-adj → ければ; noun/な-adj → なら(であれば)
ば-form (書けば, 食べれば, すれば, くれば, 高ければ, よければ, なければ; noun/な-adj → なら): a general or necessary condition. 〜ば いい to ask for or give advice.
In short
The ば-form sets a general condition, or the condition that just needs to be met: “if A, then B”. 安ければ 買います (if it's cheap, I'll buy it), どう すれば いいですか (what should I do?). You already know it without realising: the なければ of 〜なければ なりません comes from here.
- 安ければ、買います。やすければ、かいます。If it's cheap, I'll buy it.
- どう すれば いいですか。どう すれば いいですか。What should I do?
- 天気が よければ、ふじさんが 見えます。てんきが よければ、ふじさんが みえます。When the weather's good, you can see Mount Fuji.
- 急げば、まだ 間に合います。いそげば、まだ まにあいます。If we hurry, we can still make it.
The basics
With ば, the focus is on the condition itself: “all it takes is A for B”, “provided that A”. That's why you find it in questions asking for advice (どう すれば いいですか: what should I do?) and in general truths.
When the weather's good, you can see Mount Fuji.
- noun
- grammatical form
- verb
- この 薬を 飲めば、すぐ よく なりますよ。この くすりを のめば、すぐ よく なりますよ。If you take this medicine, you'll soon feel better.
- れんしゅうすれば、だれでも 上手に なる。れんしゅうすれば、だれでも じょうずに なる。With practice, anyone can get better.
How to form it
Group 1: the final -u syllable changes to -e, then ば (書く → 書けば). Group 2: る → れば (食べる → 食べれば). する → すれば, 来る → 来れば (くれば). い-adjective: い → ければ (いい → よければ). Negative: ない → なければ. Nouns and な-adjectives: なら (or であれば, more written).
| Type | Base | ば-form |
|---|---|---|
You won't know unless you go.
- よければ、いっしょに どうですか。よければ、いっしょに どうですか。Would you like to come along, if you're interested?
〜ば いい: asking for and giving advice
〜ば いいですか asks what to do: どう すれば いいですか (how should I do it?), どこで 買えば いいですか (where should I buy it?). The answer often uses the same form: 駅で 買えば いいですよ (you can just buy it at the station).
And the なければ of 〜なければ なりません, seen at N5, is exactly this form: “if you don't do it, it won't do”.
- うめだへは なにせんに 乗れば いいですか。うめだへは なにせんに のれば いいですか。Which line should I take to Umeda?
ば or たら?
ば talks about general or hypothetical conditions. It isn't used to tell a single past event: for “when I arrived, it was raining”, it's たら (着いたら).
Another limit: when A is an action and B expresses a wish, a request or an invitation, たら is more natural. 駅に 着いたら、電話して (“call me when you get there”), not “着けば”. With a state (ある, いる, an adjective, a potential), ば works very well: 時間が あれば、来て ください.
When in doubt, go for たら: it works almost everywhere in speech. ば, on the other hand, stresses the condition (“all it takes is…”), hence its use in advice and general truths.
- 時間が あれば、手伝って ください。じかんが あれば、てつだって ください。If you have time, please give me a hand.
Common mistakes
- Saying “いければ” for いい: the correct form is よければ.
- Mixing up the groups: 書く → 書けば, but 食べる → 食べれば (not “食べば”).
- Using ば for a single past event: “駅に 着けば、雨が 降って いた” is wrong; it's 着いたら.
- Putting ば before a request after an action verb: go for たら (着いたら 電話して).
