Plain form / noun + の + 場合は

Plain form / noun + の + 場合は: “in case of, in the event that”. The tone of instructions and rules; in speech, 〜たら is preferred.

In short

〜場合は means “in case of, in the event that”. It's the tone of instructions, regulations and manuals: you anticipate a possible situation and say what to do.

  • 火事の 場合は、エレベーターを 使わないで ください。かじの ばあいは、エレベーターを つかわないで ください。In case of fire, do not use the lift.
  • 遅れる 場合は、電話して ください。おくれる ばあいは、でんわして ください。If you are going to be late, please call us.
  • 雨の 場合は、運動会は 中止です。あめの ばあいは、うんどうかいは ちゅうしです。In case of rain, the sports day will be cancelled.
  • わからない 場合は、駅員に 聞いて ください。わからない ばあいは、えきいんに きいて ください。If you don't understand, please ask a member of station staff.

The basics

場合 is a noun meaning “case, situation”. Like any noun, it comes after a plain form or after a noun + の. Followed by は, it sets the frame: “in the event that…”.

You'll see it everywhere in stations, hotels and rules: it's the official way of saying “if”.

  • verb
  • じしんの 場合は、つくえの 下に 入って ください。じしんの ばあいは、つくえの したに はいって ください。In the event of an earthquake, get under a table.

How to form it

場合 behaves like any noun: you attach a plain-form relative clause to it.

TypeFormExample
verb (dictionary)〜る 場合遅れる 場合は
verb (negative)〜ない 場合来られない 場合は
verb (past)〜た 場合なくした 場合は
い-adjective〜い 場合痛い 場合は
な-adjective〜な 場合ひつような 場合は

  • 来られない 場合は、前の 日までに 知らせて ください。こられない ばあいは、まえの ひまでに しらせて ください。If you can't come, please let us know by the day before.
  • 熱が 高い 場合は、病院へ 行って ください。ねつが たかい ばあいは、びょういんへ いって ください。If you have a high fever, please go to hospital.

The tone of instructions

場合 has a serious, slightly official tone. It's used to anticipate possible situations, not to tell stories. What follows is very often an instruction (〜て ください, 〜ないで ください) or a rule (〜です, 〜できません).

  • ホテルの 部屋を 出る 場合は、かぎを フロントに かえして ください。ホテルの へやを でる ばあいは、かぎを フロントに かえして ください。When leaving your hotel room, please return the key to reception.
  • お金が 足りない 場合は、きっぷが 買えません。おかねが たりない ばあいは、きっぷが かえません。If you don't have enough money, you can't buy a ticket.

場合, たら or とき?

たら is the everyday condition, for a concrete case between people. 場合 anticipates a possibility, in an official tone. とき talks about a moment (“when”), without the idea of “if”.

FormIdeaRegister
〜たらif, once (concrete case)spoken, everyday
〜場合はin case of, in the event thatinstructions, rules
〜ときat the moment when, whenneutral
  • 雨が 降ったら、家で 映画を 見よう。あめが ふったら、いえで えいがを みよう。If it rains, we'll watch a film at home. (between friends)
  • 雨の 場合は、会は 中止に なります。あめの ばあいは、かいは ちゅうしに なります。In case of rain, the meeting will be cancelled. (announcement)

Common mistakes

  • Using it for a single past event: “yesterday, in the event that it rained…” doesn't work. 場合 anticipates; it doesn't narrate.
  • Forgetting の after a noun: 火事の 場合, not “火事 場合”.
  • Mixing up 場合 (case) and 場所 (place): they start the same but have nothing to do with each other.
  • Using it among friends: 〜たら is much more natural in speech.
