Regrets: 〜ばよかった

Verb in ば + よかった(negative: 〜なければ よかった)

Verb in ば + よかった: “I should have”; 〜なければ よかった: “I shouldn't have”. With のに, stronger regret or a gentle reproach. To express gladness: 〜て よかった.

In short

〜ばよかった expresses regret: “I should have…”. Literally: “if I had done…, it would have been good”. In the negative, 〜なければ よかった means “I shouldn't have…”.

  • もっと 勉強すれば よかった。もっと べんきょうすれば よかった。I should have studied more.
  • かさを 持って くれば よかった。かさを もって くれば よかった。I should have brought my umbrella.
  • あんな こと、言わなければ よかった。あんな こと、いわなければ よかった。I shouldn't have said something like that.
  • 早く 言って くれれば よかったのに。はやく いって くれれば よかったのに。You could have told me sooner!

The basics

Take the ば conditional (“if I did”) and add よかった, the past of いい: “if I had done…, it would have been good”. In other words: I didn't do it, and I regret it.

It's the exact equivalent of “I should have”. In the negative, 〜なければ よかった: “if I hadn't done it…”, so “I shouldn't have”.

  • あの 靴、買えば よかった。あの くつ、かえば よかった。I should have bought those shoes.
  • あの 靴、買わなければ よかった。あの くつ、かわなければ よかった。I shouldn't have bought those shoes.

How to form it

Start from the ば-form (already covered) and add よかった. For the negative, ない becomes なければ. In speech, you also hear 〜たら よかった, with the same meaning.

VerbI should have…I shouldn't have…Spoken variant
行く行けば よかった行かなければ よかった行ったら よかった
食べる食べれば よかった食べなければ よかった食べたら よかった
するすれば よかったしなければ よかったしたら よかった
来る来れば よかった来なければ よかった来たら よかった
  • もっと 早く 家を 出れば よかった。もっと はやく いえを でれば よかった。I should have left home earlier.
  • あの 映画、見なければ よかった。あの えいが、みなければ よかった。I shouldn't have watched that film.

With のに: a gentle reproach

Adding のに at the end strengthens the regret. When the action concerns someone else, it becomes a little reproach: “you could have…!”. The tone stays affectionate, or disappointed, depending on your voice. It's a conversational phrase between people who are close: aimed at a superior, the reproach would be out of place.

  • 早く 言って くれれば よかったのに。はやく いって くれれば よかったのに。You could have told me sooner!
  • 田中さんも 来れば よかったのに。たなかさんも くれば よかったのに。Shame Mr Tanaka didn't come too.

ばいい, ばよかった or てよかった?

Three phrases with いい that are easy to mix up. 〜ば いい looks to the future: it's advice or a wish. 〜ば よかった looks back on the past with regret. 〜て よかった also looks back on the past, but with relief: “I'm glad that…”.

FormMeaningExample
〜ば いいadvice, all you need to do isどう すれば いいですか(what should I do?)
〜ば よかったregret: I should have行けば よかった(I should have gone)
〜て よかったrelief: I'm glad that行って よかった(I'm glad I went)
  • この 学校に 入って よかったです。この がっこうに はいって よかったです。I'm glad I got into this school.
  • この 学校に 入れば よかったです。この がっこうに はいれば よかったです。I should have gone to this school.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up 〜ば よかった (regret, past) and 〜ば いい (advice, future).
  • Getting the negative wrong: “I shouldn't have” is 〜なければ よかった, not “〜れば よくなかった”.
  • Using 〜ば よかった to express gladness: “I'm glad I came” is 来て よかった.
