Maybe: 〜かもしれない

Plain form + かもしれません(noun / な-adj: without だ)

Plain form + かもしれない (no だ after a noun or a な-adj): “maybe, might”. Less sure than でしょう and はず; in speech, かも.

In short

〜かもしれない (polite: 〜かもしれません) means “maybe, might”. You're not sure of anything: it's just a possibility, fifty-fifty. In speech, it's often shortened to かも.

  • あしたは 雪が 降るかもしれません。あしたは ゆきが ふるかもしれません。It might snow tomorrow.
  • 田中さんは もう 帰ったかもしれません。たなかさんは もう かえったかもしれません。Mr Tanaka may have gone home already.
  • あの 人は 学生かもしれない。あの ひとは がくせいかもしれない。That person might be a student.
  • この 店、ちょっと 高いかも。この みせ、ちょっと たかいかも。This shop might be a bit expensive.

The basics

かもしれない breaks down into か (doubt) + も + しれない (“there's no knowing”): “maybe so, who knows”. It's the most cautious tool for talking about what could happen.

The sentence, piece by piece
あしたはtomorrow (topic)
雪がsnow (subject)
降るfall (plain)
かもしれませんmaybe

It might snow tomorrow.

  • noun
  • verb
  • grammatical form
  • 電車が 遅れて いるから、会に 間に合わないかもしれません。でんしゃが おくれて いるから、かいに まにあわないかもしれません。The train's delayed, so I might not make it to the meeting on time.

How to form it

As with だろう: plain form, and no だ after a noun or a な-adjective. かもしれない conjugates like an い-adjective, but it's almost always used as is or in the polite form (かもしれません).

TypeFormMeaning
verb行くかもしれない / 行かないかもしれないhe might go / he might not go
verb (past)行ったかもしれないhe may have gone
い-adjective高いかもしれないit might be expensive
な-adjectiveひまかもしれないhe might be free
noun学生かもしれないhe might be a student
  • 田中さんは あした ひまかもしれません。たなかさんは あした ひまかもしれません。Mr Tanaka might be free tomorrow.

The certainty scale

Japanese grades belief finely. From most to least certain: はずだ (it stands to reason), でしょう / だろう (it's likely), かもしれない (it's possible). たぶん (“probably”) often goes with でしょう.

FormDegreeExample
〜はずだvery sure, logical来る はずだ(he should come)
たぶん 〜でしょう / だろうlikelyたぶん 来るでしょう(he'll probably come)
〜かもしれないpossible, fifty-fifty来るかもしれない(he might come)
  • 田中さんは たぶん 来るでしょう。たなかさんは たぶん くるでしょう。Mr Tanaka will probably come.
  • 田中さんは 来るかもしれません。たなかさんは くるかもしれません。Mr Tanaka might come.

かも: the short version

Among friends, the ending gets cut off: 〜かも. It's very natural in speech, but avoid it in writing or with a superior, where you keep かもしれません.

  • あ、さいふ、家に わすれたかも。あ、さいふ、いえに わすれたかも。Oh, I might have left my wallet at home.

Common mistakes

  • Adding だ after a noun: 学生かもしれない, never “学生だかもしれない”.
  • Thinking かもしれない means very likely: it's just a possibility.
  • Writing かも in a formal message: it's casual speech.
