Towards, aimed at: 〜に向けて

N + に向けて (before a noun: に向けた/に向けての): aiming an effort at a deadline or goal, or addressing an audience. Neutral to written register, very common in the press.

In short

〜に向けて shows the direction in which an effort is aimed: a goal or a deadline (“towards, in preparation for, ahead of”) or an audience, a direction (“addressed to, aimed at”). You meet it a lot in the press, companies and institutions. Before a noun, you say に向けた or に向けての.

I'm training every day ahead of the Olympics.
Preparations for next year's launch are progressing.
The Prime Minister addressed a message to the nation.
Nagoya City unveiled a new plan for the redevelopment of the station area.

The basics

向ける is “to turn towards, to point”. So 〜に向けて says what you're directing your efforts at: a competition, an exam, a release date, a political goal. You're moving forward, and the deadline lies ahead.

The same word also works for a concrete direction or an audience: you speak “in the direction of” someone, you send a message “addressed to” the public. Either way, the idea is an arrow pointed at a target.

How to form it

You attach it to a noun: an event (大会, 発売), a goal (実現, 解決) or an audience (若者, 海外). Before another noun, you use に向けた (the most common in the press) or に向けての.

ConstructionExampleMeaning
N + に向けて大会に向けて練習するtrain ahead of the tournament
N + に向けた + N解決に向けた話し合いtalks aimed at a solution
N + に向けての + N試験に向けての準備preparation for the exam
N + に向けて (audience)海外に向けて発信するcommunicate to an overseas audience

向け (N3) attaches without に to an audience to mean “intended for, designed for”: 子ども向けの本, a book made for children. に向けて describes an ongoing effort towards a target. Remember: 向け = a product designed for someone; に向けて = an action aimed at a goal.

のために expresses a purpose in general, even a small, personal one. に向けて implies a visible deadline or goal, often a collective one. As for に対して (N3), it marks the target of an attitude or a reaction (客に対して丁寧だ), not a goal.

ExpressionIdeaExample
に向けてeffort aimed at a deadline or an audience大会に向けて練習する
向けdesigned for an audience初心者向けの本
に対してtarget of an attitude, a reactionお客様に対して失礼だ
This is a guidebook designed for foreigners.
The city puts out disaster-prevention information aimed at foreign residents.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up に向けて (towards, aimed at) and 向け (made for): you say 子ども向けの本, not “子どもに向けての本”, for an ordinary children's book.
  • Using it for a tiny, immediate purpose: “昼ご飯に向けて手を洗う” is out of all proportion; say 昼ご飯の前に手を洗う.
  • Forgetting the linking form before a noun: 発売に向けた準備, not “発売に向けて準備” when 準備 is the noun being described.
