The basics
場合 (ばあい) means “case, situation”. 〜場合は presents a possible situation and says what to do if it arises: it's the “in case of”, “in the event that”, “if” of instructions.
You see it everywhere in regulations, on signs, in announcements and emails: it's a clear, polite way to plan for different cases.
If you're going to be late, please let us know.
- verb
- noun
- grammatical form
- わからない場合は、係の人に聞いてください。わからないばあいは、かかりのひとにきいてください。If you don't understand, please ask a member of staff.
- 気分が悪くなった場合は、すぐに言ってください。きぶんがわるくなったばあいは、すぐにいってください。If you start to feel unwell, please say so straight away.
How to form it
場合 is a noun: link it like any noun. Verbs and い-adjectives in the plain form, な-adjectives with な, nouns with の. With a verb in the past (た), the case envisaged is “once the thing has happened”.
| Before 場合 | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verb | dictionary / ない / た | 来ない場合、なくした場合 |
| い-adjective | plain form | 寒い場合 |
| な-adjective | 〜な | 必要な場合 |
| noun | 〜の | 雨の場合、火事の場合 |
- 寒い場合は、上着を着てください。さむいばあいは、うわぎをきてください。If it's cold, please put on a jacket.
- 地図をなくした場合は、駅で新しいのをもらえます。ちずをなくしたばあいは、えきであたらしいのをもらえます。If you lose your map, you can get a new one at the station.
場合, とき, たら
〜とき (N5) refers to a real moment, one that happens or has happened: 京都に行ったとき、雨が降った. 〜場合 presents a hypothetical case, anticipated in advance. So you can't say “昨日京都に行った場合” to recount a single past event.
〜たら (N4) can also express a hypothesis, but it's more spoken and used in all kinds of sentences. 場合は sounds more formal, more “instruction manual”.
| Form | Idea | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜とき | real moment | 子どものとき、京都に住んでいた |
| 〜場合は | anticipated case (instruction) | 雨の場合は、中止です |
| 〜たら | hypothesis (spoken) | 雨が降ったら、やめよう |
- 子どものとき、京都に住んでいました。こどものとき、きょうとにすんでいました。When I was a child, I lived in Kyoto.
In announcement style
In regulations, 場合は is often followed by a polite instruction (〜てください, 〜ないでください) or a rule (〜できません, 〜となります). You also find it in 場合によっては, “depending on the circumstances”.
- 十八歳未満の場合は、親の同意が必要です。じゅうはっさいみまんのばあいは、おやのどういがひつようです。For those under eighteen, parental consent is required.
- 場合によっては、予約できないこともあります。ばあいによっては、よやくできないこともあります。Depending on the circumstances, it may not be possible to book.
Common mistakes
- Recounting a single past event with 場合: “昨日京都に行った場合、雨だった” is wrong. For a real moment, it's 〜とき.
- Forgetting の after a noun or な after a な-adjective: 雨の場合, 必要な場合 (not “雨場合”, “必要だ場合”).
- Reading 場合 as “ばごう”: it's ばあい, an irregular reading to remember.
