Should, ought to: 〜べきだ
Verb (dictionary) + べきだ / べき + Noun; する → すべき・するべき
Verb (dictionary) + べきだ: you should, you ought to (the speaker's moral judgement). する → すべき / するべき; べきだった = I should have; べき + noun. A firm tone.
In short
〜べきだ expresses what is right, logical or moral to do: “you should, you ought to, you must”. It's the speaker's judgement, and a fairly firm one. In the past, 〜べきだった expresses regret or reproach: “I should have”. Before a noun: べき + noun.
- 約束は守るべきだ。やくそくはまもるべきだ。You should keep your promises.
- 学生は、もっと本を読むべきだと思う。がくせいは、もっとほんをよむべきだとおもう。I think students ought to read more.
- あの時、本当のことを言うべきだった。あのとき、ほんとうのことをいうべきだった。I should have told the truth at that moment.
- これは、みんなで考えるべき問題だ。これは、みんなでかんがえるべきもんだいだ。This is a problem we should all think about together.
The basics
べき comes from an old form in classical Japanese. Placed after a verb, it says the action is the right thing to do, according to common sense, morality or logic: “you should, you ought to, you must” — close to English “ought to”.
It's a personal and fairly clear-cut judgement: the speaker is stating what is right. For simple advice, Japanese prefers 〜たほうがいい.
You should keep your promises.
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- 自分のことは自分で決めるべきだ。じぶんのことはじぶんできめるべきだ。You should decide things that concern you for yourself.
- 京都に来たら、一度は朝早くお寺に行くべきだよ。きょうとにきたら、いちどはあさはやくおてらにいくべきだよ。If you come to Kyoto, you really must visit a temple early in the morning at least once.
How to form it
べき attaches to the dictionary form. With する, you say すべき (more written) or するべき (more common in speech). べき conjugates like a noun: べきだ, べきだった, べき + noun. With a noun or a な-adjective, go through である (公平であるべきだ); with an い-adjective, through 〜くある (優しくあるべきだ).
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| V + べきだ | should | 約束は守るべきだ |
| する → すべきだ / するべきだ | should do | もっと勉強すべきだ |
| V + べきだった | should have (regret) | 早く言うべきだった |
| V + べき + noun | that should be… | 考えるべき問題 |
| な-adj. / Noun + であるべきだ | should be | 先生は公平であるべきだ |
- 先生は、どの学生にも公平であるべきだ。せんせいは、どのがくせいにもこうへいであるべきだ。A teacher should be fair to all their students.
- あの店には、もっと早く行くべきだった。あのみせには、もっとはやくいくべきだった。I should have gone to that shop sooner.
べきだ, なければならない, ほうがいい
〜なければならない (N4) expresses an obligation that comes from outside: the law, the rules, necessity. 〜べきだ expresses what is morally right in the speaker's view. 〜たほうがいい is advice, softer.
Paying taxes: 払わなければならない (it's the law). Helping your parents: 手伝うべきだ (it's the right thing). Resting when you're ill: 休んだほうがいい (it's advice).
| Form | Source | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| 〜なければならない | rule, necessity | obligation |
| 〜べきだ | morality, common sense (the speaker's view) | firm |
| 〜たほうがいい | advice | soft |
- 風邪をひいたなら、今日は休んだほうがいいよ。かぜをひいたなら、きょうはやすんだほうがいいよ。If you've caught a cold, you'd better rest today.
A tone to handle with care
べきだ sounds like a lecture. Said directly to a superior or an elder (部長はもっと休むべきです), it can seem insolent. In that case, soften it: 〜たほうがいいと思います, or 〜てはいかがでしょうか.
Among friends, or to give your general opinion, べきだと思う is perfectly natural.
- 部長、少しお休みになったほうがいいと思います。ぶちょう、すこしおやすみになったほうがいいとおもいます。Sir, I think you should get a little rest.
Common mistakes
- Putting the verb in the ない-form before べき: “行かないべきだ” is considered incorrect; say 行くべきではない (next point).
- Attaching べき to anything other than the dictionary form: “守ってべき”, “守りべき” don't exist.
- Using べきだ with a superior: it comes across as a lecture. Go for 〜たほうがいいと思います.
- Mixing up べきだ (morality) and なければならない (external obligation): for a rule or a law, it's なければならない.
