Towards, in response to, in contrast: 〜に対して
Noun + に対して / に対する + Noun / plain form (な・である) + のに対して
Noun + に対して: towards, in response to (target of an attitude); に対する + noun. Clause + のに対して: whereas, while (objective contrast).
In short
〜に対して has two uses. After a noun, it marks the target of an attitude or reaction: “towards, to, in response to” (先生に対して失礼だ). After a clause + の, it contrasts two facts: “whereas, while” (兄は背が高いのに対して、弟は低い). Before a noun: に対する.
- 先生に対して、そんな言葉を使ってはいけない。せんせいにたいして、そんなことばをつかってはいけない。You mustn't speak like that to a teacher.
- 客の質問に対して、丁寧に答えた。きゃくのしつもんにたいして、ていねいにこたえた。I answered the customer's questions politely.
- 兄はスポーツが好きなのに対して、弟は本を読むのが好きだ。あにはすぽーつがすきなのにたいして、おとうとはほんをよむのがすきだ。My big brother likes sport, whereas my little brother likes reading.
- この町の人は、観光客に対してとても親切だ。このまちのひとは、かんこうきゃくにたいしてとてもしんせつだ。The people in this town are very kind to tourists.
The basics
対 suggests two things facing each other. 〜に対して therefore marks what an attitude, a remark or a reaction is aimed at: you're polite towards someone, you respond to a question, you react to a decision.
The words that follow express an attitude or a response: 親切だ, 失礼だ, 厳しい, 答える, 反対する, 怒る, 不満がある.
You use polite language towards your superiors.
- noun
- particle
- verb
- 父は、子どもに対して厳しい人だった。ちちは、こどもにたいしてきびしいひとだった。My father was strict with his children.
- 多くの人が、この計画に対して反対している。おおくのひとが、このけいかくにたいしてはんたいしている。Many people are opposed to this plan.
How to form it
After a noun: に対して (before a verb or an adjective), に対する (before a noun). To contrast two facts, nominalise the first clause with の: な-adjectives and nouns take な (or である in writing) before の.
| Before | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
I wrote my gratitude towards my parents in a letter.
- 父は医者なのに対して、母は画家だ。ちちはいしゃなのにたいして、はははがかだ。My father is a doctor, whereas my mother is a painter.
Contrast: 〜のに対して
With の in front, に対して sets two facts side by side to contrast them, objectively: “whereas, while”. It's very common in written comparisons (statistics, descriptions).
Don't confuse it with のに (N4): のに expresses surprise or reproach (“even though…”); のに対して compares calmly.
- 京都の夏は暑いのに対して、冬はとても寒い。きょうとのなつはあついのにたいして、ふゆはとてもさむい。In Kyoto, the summers are hot, whereas the winters are very cold.
- 去年は観光客が増えたのに対して、今年は少し減った。きょねんはかんこうきゃくがふえたのにたいして、ことしはすこしへった。Last year the number of tourists rose, whereas this year it fell slightly.
に対して, について, にとって
に対して = the target of an attitude (“towards”). について = the topic being discussed (“about”). にとって = the point of view of someone judging (“for”). And “against” isn't always に対して: to oppose something, you need a verb like 反対する.
| Phrase | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 学生に対して厳しい | strict with students |
| 学生について話す | to talk about students |
| 学生にとって難しい | difficult for students |
| 計画に反対する | to be against the plan |
Common mistakes
- Always translating it as “against”: 客に対して親切だ means “kind to customers”. Opposition comes from the verb (反対する), not from に対して.
- Forgetting の (and な) for contrast: “兄は静かに対して” is wrong; say 兄は静かなのに対して.
- Mixing up に対して (towards) and について (about): 先生に対して話す = speak to the teacher (with a certain attitude); 先生について話す = talk about the teacher.
