Shouldn't: 〜べきではない

Verb (dictionary) + べきではない / べきじゃない

Verb (dictionary) + べきではない (spoken: べきじゃない): you shouldn't (moral judgement). The negative goes on べき. Regret: べきではなかった.

In short

〜べきではない says an action isn't right or reasonable: “you shouldn't, you ought not to”. The negative goes on べき, never on the verb. In the past, 〜べきではなかった expresses regret: “I shouldn't have”. In speech: べきじゃない.

  • 人の悪口を言うべきではない。ひとのわるぐちをいうべきではない。You shouldn't speak ill of others.
  • 小さい子どもを一人で家に残すべきではない。ちいさいこどもをひとりでいえにのこすべきではない。You shouldn't leave a young child home alone.
  • あんなことを言うべきじゃなかった。あんなことをいうべきじゃなかった。I shouldn't have said something like that.
  • 見た目だけで人を判断すべきではない。みためだけでひとをはんだんすべきではない。You shouldn't judge people on appearances alone.

The basics

It's the negative version of べきだ: the speaker judges the action to be wrong, unfair or unreasonable. “You shouldn't, you ought not to”.

Key point: the verb stays in the dictionary form and it's べき that takes the negative. You don't say “not doing is what you should do”, but “doing is not what you should do”.

The sentence, piece by piece
人のof others
悪口をill (object)
言うspeak
べきではないis not what you should do

You shouldn't speak ill of others.

  • noun
  • verb
  • grammatical form
  • お寺の中で、大きな声を出すべきではない。おてらのなかで、おおきなこえをだすべきではない。You shouldn't raise your voice inside a temple.
  • よくわからないことを、すぐに信じるべきではない。よくわからないことを、すぐにしんじるべきではない。You shouldn't immediately believe things you don't really know about.

How to form it

べき behaves like a noun, so its negative is ではない (written, polite), じゃない (spoken), or でない (written). In the past: ではなかった, じゃなかった.

FormRegisterExample
V + べきではないneutral, written言うべきではない
V + べきじゃないspoken言うべきじゃない
V + べきでないwritten言うべきでない
V + べきではなかったregret言うべきではなかった
V + べきではありませんpolite言うべきではありません
  • そんなに高い物を買うべきじゃなかった。そんなにたかいものをかうべきじゃなかった。I shouldn't have bought something so expensive.
  • 大切なことを、メールだけで伝えるべきではありません。たいせつなことを、めーるだけでつたえるべきではありません。You shouldn't pass on something important by email alone.

べきではない, てはいけない, ないほうがいい

〜てはいけない (N5): a clear ban, often a rule (ここでたばこを吸ってはいけない). 〜べきではない: the speaker's moral judgement (人をばかにするべきではない). 〜ないほうがいい: advice (飲みすぎないほうがいい).

So the choice depends on the source: a rule, a value, or just advice.

FormIdeaExample
〜てはいけないban (rule)ここで写真を撮ってはいけない
〜べきではないit's not right (morality)人をばかにするべきではない
〜ないほうがいいadvice夜遅く食べないほうがいい
  • 夜遅く食べないほうがいいですよ。よるおそくたべないほうがいいですよ。You'd better not eat late at night.

Common mistakes

  • Putting the negative on the verb: “言わないべきだ” is considered incorrect; say 言うべきではない.
  • Writing “べきない” or “べきくない”: べき isn't an い-adjective; its negative is ではない / じゃない.
  • Using it for an official rule: for a sign or a regulation, say 〜てはいけない or 〜ないでください.
