Sometimes: 〜ことがある
Dict./ない + ことが ある
Dict. or ない + ことが ある: sometimes, from time to time (ことも ある: sometimes also). With the た-form, it's past experience.
In short
Dictionary form (or ない-form) + ことが ある means “sometimes, there are times when”: something occasional, not a habit. Don't confuse it with 〜たことがある (N5), which talks about past experience.
- ときどき 会社に 遅れる ことが あります。ときどき かいしゃに おくれる ことが あります。I'm sometimes late for work.
- 朝ご飯を 食べない ことも あります。あさごはんを たべない ことも あります。Sometimes I skip breakfast too.
- 大阪でも 雪が 降る ことが あります。おおさかでも ゆきが ふる ことが あります。It does sometimes snow, even in Osaka.
The basics
ことが ある, literally “there's the fact of…”. With a verb in the present, it means the thing happens from time to time: not always, not never, sometimes. It often comes with ときどき or たまに.
I'm sometimes late for work.
- other
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- 父は 日曜日も 働く ことが あります。ちちは にちようびも はたらく ことが あります。My father sometimes works on Sundays too.
- この 道は 夜 こむ ことが ある。この みちは よる こむ ことが ある。This road sometimes gets busy in the evening.
The key point: present or た-form?
Everything depends on the verb form before こと. In the present (dictionary or ない), it's “sometimes”. In the た-form (N5), it's experience: “I have (at least once)…” — like English “I've been to…”.
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| dict. + ことが ある | I sometimes | すしを 食べる ことが ある |
| ない + ことが ある | I sometimes don't | 朝ご飯を 食べない ことが ある |
| た + ことが ある | I have (experience) | すしを 食べた ことが ある |
- 日本の テレビを 見る ことが あります。にほんの てれびを みる ことが あります。I sometimes watch Japanese TV.
- 日本の テレビに 出た ことが あります。にほんの てれびに でた ことが あります。I've been on Japanese TV.
ことも ある: softer
With も instead of が, you add “also”: alongside what usually happens, it also sometimes happens that… The sentence becomes softer, more nuanced. And it's never a regular habit: for what you always do, you don't use ことが ある.
- いつもは 家で 食べますが、外で 食べる ことも あります。いつもは いえで たべますが、そとで たべる ことも あります。I usually eat at home, but sometimes I eat out too.
- 忙しくて、電話に 出られない ことも あります。いそがしくて、でんわに でられない ことも あります。Sometimes I'm so busy I can't answer the phone.
Common mistakes
- Mixing it up with 〜たことがある: 行く ことが ある (I sometimes go) ≠ 行った ことが ある (I've been there).
- Using it for a regular habit: for “I run every morning”, it's 毎朝 走ります, not ことが ある.
- Translating it as “I have”: with the present, it's “I sometimes”.
