Saying what made you feel something: 〜て + feeling
Verb-て/adj-くて/noun-で + うれしい, 安心した, 困った…
Verb-て / adj-くて / noun-で + feeling or state: the て-form gives the cause (聞いて びっくりした). No intention or order afterwards: use から or ので for that.
In short
The て-form can express the cause of a feeling or a state: 試験に 合格して うれしい, “I'm happy I passed the exam”. The second part says what you feel or what results from it, never an intention or an order.
- 試験に 合格して、うれしいです。しけんに ごうかくして、うれしいです。I'm happy I passed the exam.
- ニュースを 聞いて、びっくりしました。にゅーすを きいて、びっくりしました。I was surprised to hear the news.
- 頭が 痛くて、寝られません。あたまが いたくて、ねられません。I've got a headache, so I can't sleep.
The basics
At N5, the て-form links actions: 起きて、食べて、出かける. It can also link a cause and the feeling it produces. The order is: what happened, then what you feel — the reverse of English, which tends to say the feeling first (“I'm glad I passed”).
I'm happy I passed the exam.
- noun
- verb
- adjective
- 会えて よかった。あえて よかった。I'm glad we got to see each other.
- おそく なって、すみません。おそく なって、すみません。Sorry I'm late.
How to form it
Verb: て-form. い-adjective: 〜くて. な-adjective and noun: 〜で. For a negative cause (“can't, don't understand”), use 〜なくて: covered in detail later.
| Word | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verb | 〜て | ニュースを 聞いて びっくりした |
| potential verb | 〜て | 会えて うれしい |
| い-adj | 〜くて | 頭が 痛くて 寝られない |
| な-adj | 〜で | 静かで いい |
| noun | 〜で | かぜで 学校を 休んだ |
- かぜで 学校を 休みました。かぜで がっこうを やすみました。I missed school because of a cold.
- この 町は 静かで、住みやすい。この まちは しずかで、すみやすい。This town is quiet, so it's a nice place to live.
No intention in the second part
After this causal て, you find a feeling (うれしい, 困った, びっくりした), a state or an inability (寝られない). You can't put a decision, an invitation or an order there. For that, you need から or ので.
| Sentence | Correct? |
|---|---|
| 雨が 降って、困った | ✓ feeling |
| 雨が 降って、行きましょう | × invitation |
| 雨が 降って いるので、タクシーで 行きましょう | ✓ with ので |
- 道が こんで いて、遅れました。みちが こんで いて、おくれました。There were traffic jams, so I was late.
- 道が こんで いるから、電車で 行こう。みちが こんで いるから、でんしゃで いこう。The roads are jammed, so let's take the train.
Common mistakes
- Putting an intention after the causal て: “雨が 降って、帰りましょう” is wrong; say 雨が 降って いるから、帰りましょう.
- Forgetting くて with an い-adjective: 痛くて, not “痛いて”.
- Reading it as a simple sequence of actions: 聞いて びっくりした isn't “I listened and then I was surprised”, but “surprised because I heard”.
