Without doing, for lack of: 〜ないで・〜なくて

〜ないで = without doing / instead of doing (manner); 〜なくて = because it didn't happen, followed by a feeling or state (バスが 来なくて 困った).

In short

The two negative て-forms aren't interchangeable. 〜ないで says how you do the action: “without” or “instead of” (朝ご飯を 食べないで 来た). 〜なくて gives a negative cause followed by a feeling or a state (バスが 来なくて、困った).

I came to school without having breakfast.
Instead of taking the bus, I walked to the station.
The bus didn't come, and I was stuck.

The basics

The ない-form has two ways of “going into て”. ないで describes manner: you do a main action without doing the other, or in place of it — English “without …ing” or “instead of …ing”. なくて explains: because something didn't happen, you feel something or end up in a certain state — English “because… didn't”.

The sentence, piece by piece

I came

I came to school without having breakfast.

I drink my coffee without sugar.
Shame we couldn't see each other.

The two uses side by side

To choose, look at the second part. If it's an action you do (deliberately), it's ないで. If it's a feeling, a state or a consequence you undergo, it's なくて.

FormUseExample
On Sunday, instead of going out, I took it easy at home.
I couldn't find the way, and I was stuck.

Meaning traps

As with the causal て (previous point), the second part after なくて can't be an intention or an order. And ないで can't express a cause: “食べないで おなかが すいた” doesn't work; say 食べなくて… or, better, 食べなかったので.

I studied without sleeping. (manner)
I couldn't sleep, so I'm tired. (cause)

Common mistakes

  • Using なくて for manner: “朝ご飯を 食べなくて 学校へ 行った” is wrong; it's 食べないで.
  • Mixing up 〜ないで “without doing” and 〜ないで ください “please don't”: the end of the sentence makes the difference.
  • Putting an intention after なくて: “お金が なくて、買いましょう” isn't said.
