Measuring a quality: 〜さ

い-adj (without い) + さ; な-adj + さ

Adjective (without い) + さ, な-adj + さ: the noun for the quality or its measurement (高さ, 重さ, 優しさ). いい → よさ.

In short

〜さ turns an adjective into a noun for the quality or its measurement: 高い → 高さ (height), 重い → 重さ (weight), 優しい → 優しさ (kindness). Very useful for asking about size, weight or length.

  • この 山の 高さは どのぐらいですか。この やまの たかさは どのぐらいですか。How high is this mountain?
  • にもつの 重さを はかって ください。にもつの おもさを はかって ください。Please weigh the luggage.
  • 彼の 優しさが 好きです。かれの やさしさが すきです。I love his kindness.

The basics

English has a different word or suffix each time: “high → height”, “heavy → weight”, “kind → kindness”. Japanese uses a single suffix for all of them: さ. The resulting word is a noun, used with は, が, を, の like any other noun.

Measurement or quality

With adjectives of dimension (高い, 長い, 重い), さ gives a neutral measurement: 高さ is height, whether great or small. With adjectives of quality (優しい, 静かだ), it names the quality itself, often spoken of with admiration.

At N3, you'll also meet 〜み (重み, あまみ), which expresses a sensation you feel.

  • 日本の 夏の あつさには びっくりしました。にほんの なつの あつさには びっくりしました。The heat of the Japanese summer took me by surprise.
  • 大阪の 人の 優しさに 感動した。おおさかの ひとの やさしさに かんどうした。I was touched by the kindness of the people in Osaka.

Common mistakes

  • Adding さ to a verb: さ only applies to adjectives.
  • Saying “いいさ”: the form is よさ.
  • Keeping い or な: 重さ, 静かさ, not “重いさ”, “静かなさ”.
  • Mixing up 重さ (weight, a noun) and 重い (heavy, an adjective).
