A N called: 〜という N
Noun/sentence + という + noun
Noun or sentence + という + N: a N called…, or the N that… (何という 花, 日本で 働く という 夢). In speech: って.
In short
〜という N is used to name something the other person may not know: 「たこやき」という 食べ物, “a food called takoyaki”. It's also used to spell out the content of a noun: 日本で 働く という 夢, “the dream of working in Japan”.
- 「たこやき」という 食べ物を 知って いますか。「たこやき」という たべものを しって いますか。Do you know a food called “takoyaki”?
- 山田という 人から 電話が ありました。やまだという ひとから でんわが ありました。Someone called Yamada phoned.
- これは 何という 花ですか。これは なんという はなですか。What's this flower called?
The basics
という is と (quotation) + いう (to say): “that's called”. Placed between a proper name and a common noun, it introduces a thing or a person the other person doesn't necessarily know: a dish, a place, a person — English “a… called”.
In this grammatical use, いう is written in hiragana.
Do you know a food called “takoyaki”?
- noun
- grammatical form
- verb
- 「しんさいばし」という 駅で 降りて ください。「しんさいばし」という えきで おりて ください。Get off at the station called “Shinsaibashi”.
- 「グリコ」という 有名な かんばんを 見ました。「ぐりこ」という ゆうめいな かんばんを みました。I saw the famous sign known as the “Glico” sign.
Asking a name, spelling out content
何という + noun? asks what something is called: 何という 花ですか. And after a whole sentence, という spells out what a noun like 夢 (dream), 話 (story, news), ニュース or いけん (opinion) contains: “the dream of…”, “the news that…”.
| Use | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| naming | 山田という 人 | a person called Yamada |
| asking a name | 何という 花ですか | what's this flower called? |
| spelling out content | 日本で 働く という 夢 | the dream of working in Japan |
| reporting news | 先生が やめる という 話 | the news that the teacher is leaving |
- この 駅は 何という 名前ですか。この えきは なんという なまえですか。What's this station called?
- 先生が 来月 やめる という 話を 聞きました。せんせいが らいげつ やめる という はなしを ききました。I heard that the teacher is leaving next month.
という, と言った and って
と言う (with the kanji) reports words actually spoken: 田中さんは 「行く」と 言った. という before a noun doesn't report anything: it names or specifies. In speech, it's often shortened to って: 「たこやき」って 何? (“what are takoyaki?”).
- 田中さんは 来ないと 言いました。たなかさんは こないと いいました。Mr Tanaka said he wouldn't come. (reported words)
- 「たこやき」って 何?「たこやき」って なに?What are takoyaki? (spoken)
Common mistakes
- Writing 言う in kanji in this use: before a noun, write という in hiragana.
- Mixing up という N (“a N called”) and と言った (“said that”).
- Forgetting と: “山田いう 人” is wrong; it's 山田という 人.
