Passing on an instruction: 〜ように言う

Dictionary form / ない + ように 言う(頼む, 注意する…)

Dictionary / ない + ように 言う (頼む, 注意する, 伝える): “tell someone to / not to”. The person receiving the instruction takes に.

In short

〜ように 言う reports an order or a request in indirect speech: “to tell someone to do (or not to do) something”. The verb goes in the dictionary form or the ない-form. 言う can be replaced by 頼む (to ask), 注意する (to warn), 伝える (to pass on).

  • 先生は 学生に 早く 来る ように 言いました。せんせいは がくせいに はやく くる ように いいました。The teacher told the students to come early.
  • 田中さんに あした 電話する ように 言って ください。たなかさんに あした でんわする ように いって ください。Please tell Mr Tanaka to call me tomorrow.
  • 医者は わたしに お酒を 飲まない ように 言いました。いしゃは わたしに おさけを のまない ように いいました。The doctor told me not to drink alcohol.
  • 友だちに 写真を とって くれる ように 頼みました。ともだちに しゃしんを とって くれる ように たのみました。I asked a friend to take a photo of me.

The basics

When reporting an order or a request, Japanese doesn't repeat the original form (来て ください, 来なさい, 来い…). It replaces it with a plain form + ように: “he told me to come”. It's the equivalent of English “tell someone to” + verb.

The person receiving the instruction takes に.

The sentence, piece by piece

言いましたsaid

The teacher told the students to come early.

  • noun
  • verb
  • grammatical form
  • 先生:「あしたは 早く 来て ください。」せんせい:「あしたは はやく きて ください。」Teacher: “Please come early tomorrow.” (direct speech)
  • 先生は あしたは 早く 来る ように 言いました。せんせいは あしたは はやく くる ように いいました。The teacher told us to come early tomorrow. (indirect speech)

From direct to indirect speech

Whatever the original form, bring it back to the dictionary form (or the ない-form for a ban), then add ように.

Original wordsReported with ように
「来て ください」来る ように 言った
「来なさい」 / 「来い」来る ように 言った
「来ないで ください」来ない ように 言った
「来て くれませんか」来て くれる ように たのんだ
  • 駅員が 下がる ように 注意しました。えきいんが さがる ように ちゅういしました。The station attendant asked people to stand back.
  • 母に 早く 帰る ように 伝えて ください。ははに はやく かえる ように つたえて ください。Please tell my mother to come home soon.

ように 言う or と 言う?

と 言う reports words or information: 田中さんは あした 来ると 言った, “Tanaka said he would come tomorrow”. ように 言う reports an instruction given to someone: 田中さんに 来る ように 言った, “I told Tanaka to come”.

You can also quote the bare order with と: 「早く しろ」と 言った. It's livelier, but harsher.

  • 田中さんは あした 来ると 言いました。たなかさんは あした くると いいました。Mr Tanaka said he would come tomorrow. (information)
  • 田中さんに あした 来る ように 言いました。たなかさんに あした くる ように いいました。I told Mr Tanaka to come tomorrow. (instruction)

Common mistakes

  • Keeping the original form (“来て ください ように”): in indirect speech, it's 来る ように.
  • Mixing up ように 言う (“tell someone to”) and と 言う (“say that”).
  • Forgetting the negative: “he told me not to come” = 来ない ように 言った, not “来る ように 言わなかった” (which means “he didn't tell me to come”).
