  • 毎日 やさいを 食べる ように して います。まいにち やさいを たべる ように して います。I make a point of eating vegetables every day.
  • あしたは 遅れない ように して ください。あしたは おくれない ように して ください。Please make sure you're not late tomorrow.
  • できるだけ 日本語で 話す ように します。できるだけ にほんごで はなす ように します。I'll try to speak Japanese as much as possible.
  • 夜 おそく 食べない ように して います。よる おそく たべない ように して います。I try not to eat late at night.

The basics

する means “to do”. 〜ように する is “to see to it that”: you act so that something becomes reality, with no guarantee. In English: “to make a point of”, “to make sure”, “to try to”, “to be careful to”.

In the form 〜ように して いる, the effort has become a habit you keep up: “I make a point of (these days, regularly)”.

How to form it

Dictionary form or ない-form + ように + conjugated する. The tense of する changes the meaning: a decision for the future, an ongoing habit, or an instruction.

FormMeaningExample
〜ように しますI'll try to早く 寝る ように します
〜ように して いますI make a point of (habit)早く 寝る ように して います
〜ように して くださいplease make sure (polite instruction)わすれない ように して ください
  • これからは 早く 寝る ように します。これからは はやく ねる ように します。From now on, I'll try to go to bed early.
  • わすれものを しない ように して ください。わすれものを しない ように して ください。Please make sure you don't leave anything behind.

The four ように seen so far

ように appears in several patterns. What follows makes all the difference.

PatternMeaningExample
〜ように なるchange: come to読めるように なった
〜ように + actionpurpose: so thatわすれないように メモする
〜ように 言うinstruction: tell to来る ように 言った
〜ように するeffort: make a point of毎日 走る ように して いる
  • 毎日 走る ように なりました。まいにち はしる ように なりました。I've ended up running every day. (change)
  • 毎日 走る ように して います。まいにち はしる ように して います。I make a point of running every day. (effort)

An effort, not a decision

ように する says you're making an effort, not that you've made a clear-cut decision. To announce a decision (“I've decided to…”), Japanese has 〜ことに する, coming later. And ように する doesn't guarantee the result: you try, that's all.

  • あまり お金を 使わない ように して いますが、難しいです。あまり おかねを つかわない ように して いますが、むずかしいです。I try not to spend too much money, but it's hard.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up ように する (deliberate effort) and ように なる (a change that happens).
  • Putting a noun in front (“やさいの ように する”): you need a verb, やさいを 食べる ように する.
  • Thinking ように する guarantees the result: it's an effort, not a promise.
