It's not as if: 〜ではあるまいし
Noun + ではあるまいし/じゃあるまいし / verb + わけではあるまいし
Noun + ではあるまいし/じゃあるまいし: “it's not as if…”, an absurd hypothesis dismissed to back up a reproach, an order or advice. With a verb: わけではあるまいし.
In short
〜ではあるまいし means “it's not as if you were…”, and serves as the springboard for a reproach, an order or a piece of advice: 子どもじゃあるまいし、自分でやりなさい. あるまい is the classical form of ないだろう. Spoken with じゃ, written with では.
- 子どもじゃあるまいし、自分のことは自分でやりなさい。こどもじゃあるまいし、じぶんのことはじぶんでやりなさい。You're not a child — sort yourself out.
- 神様ではあるまいし、明日のことなど私にわかるはずがない。かみさまではあるまいし、あしたのことなどわたしにわかるはずがない。I'm not God: how am I supposed to know what will happen tomorrow?
- 一生会えないわけじゃあるまいし、そんなに泣かないで。いっしょうあえないわけじゃあるまいし、そんなになかないで。It's not as if we'll never see each other again — don't cry like that.
The basics
あるまい is a probable negative inherited from classical Japanese: 〜ではあるまい = 〜ではないだろう. With し (“and besides”), you get: “you're hardly a child, so…”. You dismiss an absurd hypothesis in order to draw a conclusion — English “it's not as if…”, “you're not a child, you know”.
The second half is a judgement, an order, a piece of advice or a reproach. The tone is often irritated or mocking, sometimes affectionate, to reassure.
You're not a child — sort yourself out.
- noun
- grammatical form
- verb
- お化けが出るわけじゃあるまいし、一人で寝られるでしょう。おばけがでるわけじゃあるまいし、ひとりでねられるでしょう。It's not as if there'll be ghosts — surely you can sleep on your own.
How to form it
After a noun: ではあるまいし (written, formal) or じゃあるまいし (spoken). After a verb or an adjective, you go through わけ or の: 〜わけではあるまいし, 〜のではあるまいし.
| Construction | Example | Register |
|---|---|---|
| Noun + ではあるまいし | 神様ではあるまいし | written, formal |
| Noun + じゃあるまいし | 子どもじゃあるまいし | spoken |
| Verb + わけではあるまいし | 死ぬわけではあるまいし | written, spoken |
| Verb + んじゃあるまいし | 遊びに行くんじゃあるまいし | spoken |
- 遊びに行くんじゃあるまいし、もっときちんとした服を着なさい。あそびにいくんじゃあるまいし、もっときちんとしたふくをきなさい。You're not going out to play — put on something more presentable.
- 死ぬわけではあるまいし、少しの失敗で落ち込むことはない。しぬわけではあるまいし、すこしのしっぱいでおちこむことはない。It's not the end of the world; there's no need to get down over a small failure.
ではあるまいし, ではないのだから
〜ではないのだから expresses the same logic in a neutral, explanatory way: 子どもではないのだから、自分でやりなさい. 〜ではあるまいし adds irony: the dismissed hypothesis is deliberately absurd or exaggerated (神様, お化け, 子ども for an adult).
| Sentence | Nuance |
|---|---|
| 子どもではないのだから、自分でやりなさい | you're not a child, so (neutral) |
| 子どもじゃあるまいし、自分でやりなさい | you're hardly a kid! (ironic) |
- 子どもではないのだから、自分の部屋くらい自分で片づけなさい。こどもではないのだから、じぶんのへやくらいじぶんでかたづけなさい。You're not a child, so at least tidy your own room. (neutral version)
- 大人なのだから、自分の行動に責任を持つべきだ。おとななのだから、じぶんのこうどうにせきにんをもつべきだ。You're an adult, so you should take responsibility for your actions. (neutral version, no irony)
Common mistakes
- Ending with a mere observation: the second half must be a reproach, an order, a piece of advice or a judgement.
- Dismissing あるまい as a rare, useless form: it's simply ないだろう in classical style.
- Attaching ではあるまいし directly to a verb: you need わけ or の (死ぬわけではあるまいし).
