V in た/noun の + かいもなく: despite the effort, in vain. V in た + かいがある: the effort paid off. Compounds in がい: やりがい, 生きがい.
In short
かい (甲斐) refers to the result you hoped for from an effort. 〜かいがある is “it was worth it”; 〜かいもなく, “despite all the effort, in vain”. In compounds, かい becomes がい: やりがい (what makes something worth throwing yourself into), 生きがい (reason for living). Written register for かいもなく, everyday for かいがある.
- 医師たちの懸命な治療のかいもなく、患者は亡くなった。いしたちのけんめいなちりょうのかいもなく、かんじゃはなくなった。Despite the doctors' all-out efforts, the patient died.
- 毎日練習したかいがあって、ついに試合に勝てた。まいにちれんしゅうしたかいがあって、ついにしあいにかてた。My daily practice paid off: I finally won a match.
- 子どもたちの成長を見ると、この仕事にやりがいを感じる。こどもたちのせいちょうをみると、このしごとにやりがいをかんじる。When I see the children growing up, I feel this job is really worthwhile.
The basics
かい is the reward you hope for from an effort, care or a wait. If the reward comes, 〜かいがある (“it was worth it”); if it doesn't, 〜かいもなく (“in vain, despite everything”) — English “it paid off” versus “all for nothing”.
The expression always implies real effort and an expectation: you don't use it for a merely unexpected fact.
Despite the doctors' all-out efforts, the patient died.

How to form it
The effort has already been made: the verb goes in the た-form. With a noun, you go through の. In compounds with the ます-stem of a verb or with a noun, かい is voiced to がい.
| Construction | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| V in た + かいがある | 勉強したかいがあった | studying was worth it |
| V in た + かいもなく | 勉強したかいもなく | despite studying, in vain |
| Noun + の + かいもなく | 治療のかいもなく | despite the treatment |
| V (masu) + がい | やりがい, 生きがい, 教えがい | what makes the action rewarding |
| V (masu) + がいがない | 言いがいがない | no point saying it |
- 定年後は、庭いじりが父の生きがいになっている。ていねんごは、にわいじりがちちのいきがいになっている。Since he retired, gardening has become my father's reason for living.
- 彼は何度注意しても聞かないので、言いがいがない。かれはなんどちゅういしてもきかないので、いいがいがない。He never listens however often you tell him, so there's no point saying anything.
かいもなく, のに, にもかかわらず, おかげで
〜のに and 〜にもかかわらず express general concession (“although, despite”), without necessarily involving effort. 〜かいもなく specifies that it's an effort that came to nothing. Conversely, 〜おかげで credits a good result to a cause, whereas 〜かいがあって stresses that it's your own effort that paid off.
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜かいもなく | effort that came to nothing | 練習したかいもなく負けた |
| 〜のに | even though (surprise, regret) | 練習したのに負けた |
| 〜にもかかわらず | despite (written) | 雨にもかかわらず試合は行われた |
| 〜かいがあって | the effort paid off | 練習したかいがあって勝った |
| 〜おかげで | thanks to | 先生のおかげで勝った |
- 先生のおかげで、無事に卒業できた。せんせいのおかげで、ぶじにそつぎょうできた。Thanks to my teacher, I was able to graduate without a hitch. (おかげで: credit given to someone else)
- 大雨にもかかわらず、試合は予定どおり行われた。おおあめにもかかわらず、しあいはよていどおりおこなわれた。Despite the torrential rain, the match went ahead as planned. (no effort involved)
Common mistakes
- Putting the verb in the dictionary form: it's 練習したかいがあった; the effort has been made.
- Forgetting the voicing in compounds: you say やりがい, 生きがい, not “やりかい”.
- Using it without any prior effort: “雨のかいもなく” makes no sense; rain isn't an effort.
