It's not out of the question: 〜ないものでもない

Verb in ない + ものでもない

V in ない + ものでもない: “it's not out of the question, I might possibly”, a possibility conceded with reservations. More written than 〜ないこともない.

In short

〜ないものでもない is a double negative that leaves a door slightly ajar: “it's not out of the question, I might possibly”. It's used for a guarded answer, a grudging concession (条件次第では引き受けないものでもない). Written register or careful speech.

  • 条件次第では、その仕事を引き受けないものでもない。じょうけんしだいでは、そのしごとをひきうけないものでもない。Depending on the terms, I might possibly take on the job.
  • 今から急げば、間に合わないものでもない。いまからいそげば、まにあわないものでもない。If we hurry now, we still have a chance of making it in time.
  • 君の気持ちもわからないものでもない。きみのきもちもわからないものでもない。I can understand how you feel, to some extent.

The basics

The structure is “it isn't a thing (もの) that doesn't get done”: two negatives that cancel out, but not completely. The result is a faint possibility, grudgingly conceded — like English “I wouldn't say no”, “it's not out of the question”.

The tone is that of negotiation or caution: you don't say yes, you don't say no, you hint that it could be considered under certain conditions. Hence its frequent companions: 条件次第では, 場合によっては, 〜ば.

The sentence, piece by piece
条件次第ではdepending on the terms
その仕事をthe job (object)
引き受けないnot take on
ものでもないit's not out of the question

  • other
  • noun
  • verb
  • grammatical form
  • 場合によっては、計画を見直さないものでもない。ばあいによっては、けいかくをみなおさないものでもない。Depending on the circumstances, we're not against reviewing the plan.

How to form it

Take the ない-form of the verb (often a potential) and add ものでもない. The close spoken form is 〜ないこともない, and the variant 〜ないでもない also exists.

VerbFormMeaning
引き受ける引き受けないものでもないI might possibly accept
わかるわからないものでもないI can understand a little
できるできないものでもないit's not impossible
行ける行けないものでもないI could go at a push
  • 少し遠いが、歩いて行けないものでもない。すこしとおいが、あるいていけないものでもない。It's a bit far, but you could walk there at a push.
  • そこまで言うなら、考えてみないものでもない。そこまでいうなら、かんがえてみないものでもない。If you insist that much, I'm willing to think about it.

ないものでもない, ないこともない, ないとも限らない

〜ないこともない (N2) has the same meaning and is far more common in speech. 〜ないものでもない is more written and even more guarded. 〜ないとも限らない is different: it flags a risk you can't rule out (“an accident can't be ruled out”), not a personal willingness. 〜かもしれない expresses simple probability, with no reluctance.

ExpressionNuanceExample
〜ないものでもないa grudgingly conceded possibility (written)引き受けないものでもない
〜ないこともないsame idea, everyday行けないこともない
〜ないとも限らないa risk you can't rule out事故が起きないとも限らない
〜かもしれないsimple probability行くかもしれない
  • 油断していると、事故が起きないとも限らない。ゆだんしていると、じこがおきないともかぎらない。If you let your guard down, an accident can't be ruled out. (a risk)
  • 辛いものも、食べられないことはない。からいものも、たべられないことはない。Spicy food — I can eat it, at a push. (spoken)

Common mistakes

  • Taking the double negative for a straight “yes”: it's a reluctant “maybe”.
  • Using it for a danger: for “an accident can't be ruled out”, it's 〜ないとも限らない.
  • Forgetting the ない-form: you say 引き受けないものでもない, not “引き受けるものでもない” (which means “it's not something one should accept”).
