The basics
こと turns the verb into a noun (“the fact of”), and なく or なしに says “without”. So 〜ことなく means “without the fact of…”, a written, slightly solemn way of saying 〜ずに or 〜ないで.
It's often used to highlight remarkable constancy (休むことなく, あきらめることなく) or the absence of hesitation (迷うことなく, ためらうことなく) — English “unceasingly”, “without a moment's hesitation”.
He worked without taking a single day off.

ことなく, ずに, ないで, なくして
〜ないで is spoken, 〜ずに is used everywhere, 〜ことなく is written and solemn. The meaning “without doing” is the same. With a noun, you don't use ことなく but 〜なくして(は), also written, or 〜なしに(は).
| Form | Register | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜ないで | spoken | 朝ごはんを食べないで出かけた |
| 〜ずに | neutral | 朝ごはんを食べずに出かけた |
| 〜ことなく | written, solemn | 一度も休むことなく走り続けた |
| Noun + なくして | written | 努力なくして成功なし |
- 彼は最後まであきらめることなく走り抜いた。かれはさいごまであきらめることなくはしりぬいた。He ran all the way to the finish without ever giving up. (written)
- 朝ごはんを食べずに家を出た。あさごはんをたべずにいえをでた。I left home without having breakfast. (neutral)
Common mistakes
- Using it for an everyday action in speech (“歯を磨くことなく寝ちゃった”): it sounds pompous; say 磨かないで.
- Attaching ことなく to a noun: you say 愛なくして or 努力なしに, not “愛ことなく”.
- Forgetting the negative after ことなしには: the sentence must end in ない, できない or ありえない.
