There are limits: 〜にもほどがある
Noun / adjective / verb (dictionary) + にもほどがある
Noun/adjective/verb + にもほどがある: “there are limits to…”, indignation at an excess. Spoken and emotional; for a plain observation, 〜すぎる.
In short
〜にもほどがある expresses indignation at an excess: “there are limits to…”, “this is really too much”. You're denouncing behaviour that oversteps the mark (冗談にもほどがある, 失礼にもほどがある). Spoken register, emotionally charged.

The basics
ほど refers to a measure, a reasonable limit. 〜にもほどがある literally says “even for A, there's a limit”: you're accusing someone of having crossed that limit — English “there are limits!”, “that's going too far”.
The sentence often opens with a description of the shocking behaviour, followed by 〜なんて or 〜とは (“doing something like that…”) before the indignant conclusion.

How to form it
The expression goes after a noun, the stem of a な-adjective, an い-adjective or a verb in the dictionary form. The variant 〜にも限度がある is slightly more neutral.
| Base | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Noun | 冗談にもほどがある | a joke's a joke, but there are limits |
| な-adjective (stem) | 失礼にもほどがある | how rude can you get! |
| い-adjective | 高いにもほどがある | that's far too expensive |
| Verb (dictionary) | 人をばかにするにもほどがある | that's taking people for fools |
| Variant | わがままにも限度がある | there's a limit to selfishness |
- 人をばかにするにもほどがある。ひとをばかにするにもほどがある。That's taking people for fools!
- いくら子どもでも、わがままにも限度がある。いくらこどもでも、わがままにもげんどがある。Even for a child, there's a limit to how selfish you can be.
にもほどがある, すぎる, もいいところだ
〜すぎる notes an excess without anger (このコーヒーは高すぎる). 〜もいいところだ (“it's the height of”) is close to 〜にもほどがある, but more ironic: 迷惑もいいところだ. 〜にもほどがある is the most direct way to express indignation.
Online you also see playful, positive uses (かわいいにもほどがある, “it's too cute for words”), but the normal use is still reproach.
| Sentence | Nuance |
|---|---|
| 高すぎる | it's too expensive (observation) |
| 高いにもほどがある | it's outrageously expensive (indignation) |
| ぼったくりもいいところだ | it's daylight robbery (irony) |
- このコーヒーは、ちょっと高すぎる。このこーひーは、ちょっとたかすぎる。This coffee is a bit too expensive. (plain observation)
- 夜中に電話してくるなんて、非常識もいいところだ。よなかにでんわしてくるなんて、ひじょうしきもいいところだ。Phoning in the middle of the night is the height of bad manners.
Common mistakes
- Saying it to a superior or in a polite context: it's an angry phrase.
- Forgetting も: the form is にもほどがある, not “にほどがある”.
- Using it for a plain observation (“今日は暑いにもほどがある”): without indignation, say 暑すぎる.
