Plain form + ものとして / plain form + ものとする

Plain form + ものとして: “taking it that”; you treat a fact as settled. ものとする: the provision of contracts and regulations, “it is laid down that, shall”. Administrative register.

In short

〜ものとして means “taking it that, on the assumption that”: you treat a situation as settled, whether or not it's true (欠席者は棄権したものとして扱う). 〜ものとする, at the end of a sentence, is the formula of contracts and regulations: “it is hereby agreed that, … shall be deemed”. Written, administrative and legal register.

  • 彼は来ないものとして、計画を立て直そう。かれはこないものとして、けいかくをたてなおそう。Let's assume he isn't coming and redo the plan.

The basics

In 〜ものとして, もの presents something as a state of affairs, and として says “taking it as”. You decide to treat a situation as established so you can move forward: “let's take it that…”.

At the end of a sentence, 〜ものとする lays down a rule. It isn't the speaker's own wish, but an impersonal provision, like the “shall” or “is deemed to” of English contracts.

How to form it

ものとして and ものとする follow a clause in the plain form (verb, adjective). With a noun, you go through である: 本人であるものとして. The verbs that follow ものとして are typical: 扱う (to treat), 考える, 話を進める, 計画する. みなす (“to regard as”) is also used: 〜ものとみなす.

ものとして, として, と仮定して, ことにする

〜として after a noun means “as” (代表として). 〜と仮定して sets out an explicit hypothesis, as in mathematics or science. 〜ことにする expresses a personal decision (行くことにする). 〜ものとして sits between the two: you decide to treat a fact as settled, often for practical reasons.

Common mistakes

  • Taking ものとする for a personal decision: “私は来年留学するものとする” is wrong. For yourself, say 留学することにする.
  • Attaching ものとして directly to a noun: you say 本人であるものとして, not “本人ものとして”.
  • Confusing it with ものの (“although”) or ものなら (“if ever”): those are different points.
