Since, given that: 〜以上(は)
plain form (N である) + 以上(は)
Plain form (N である) + 以上(は): “since, given that…”, followed by what that fact requires. Neutral and logical, between からには (spoken) and 上は (solemn).
In short
〜以上(は)sets out an established or accepted fact (“since X”) and draws from it what has to be accepted: a duty, a will, a judgement or a logical conclusion. The は is optional. With a noun or a な-adjective, you say である以上. Neutral to formal register, very common at work, in regulations and in reasoning.
- 約束した以上、守るべきだ。やくそくしたいじょう、まもるべきだ。Since you promised, you should keep your word.
- 学生である以上、勉強を優先しなければならない。がくせいであるいじょう、べんきょうをゆうせんしなければならない。As long as you're a student, your studies have to come first.
- プロである以上、言い訳はできない。ぷろであるいじょう、いいわけはできない。When you're a professional, there's no room for excuses.
The basics
以上 first means “beyond, more than”. Here, it means “from the moment this fact is established”. You start from a reality that can no longer be changed (a promise, a status, a choice) and deduce what it requires. It's reasoning: “since A, then necessarily B”.
Since you promised, you should keep your word.
- verb
- grammatical form
- 参加すると言った以上は、途中でやめるわけにはいかない。さんかするといったいじょうは、とちゅうでやめるわけにはいかない。Since I said I'd take part, I can't drop out halfway.
How to form it
以上 goes after the plain form of a verb or an い-adjective. For a noun or a な-adjective, you go through である (written style): 学生である以上, 不可能である以上 — not ×学生な以上.
| Word | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb | plain form + 以上(は) | 約束した以上・やる以上は |
| Negative verb | 〜ない + 以上 | できない以上 |
| い-adjective | 〜い + 以上 | 高い以上 |
| Noun / な-adj. | 〜である + 以上 | プロである以上 |
- 全員がそろわない以上、会議は始められない。ぜんいんがそろわないいじょう、かいぎははじめられない。Since not everyone is here, we can't start the meeting.
- 社員である以上、会社の規則に従う必要がある。しゃいんであるいじょう、かいしゃのきそくにしたがうひつようがある。As long as you're an employee, you're required to follow company rules.
What the second part says
It draws a consequence: a duty (なければならない, べきだ), a will (つもりだ, たい), an impossibility (わけにはいかない, できない), a logical judgement (はずだ, だろう). A simple statement doesn't fit.
- これだけ準備した以上、失敗するはずがない。これだけじゅんびしたいじょう、しっぱいするはずがない。After all this preparation, there's no way we'll fail.
以上は, からには, 上は, and the other 以上
からには is more spoken and personal (desire, encouragement), 上は more solemn. 以上は lends itself well to reasoning and rules, because it sounds logical and objective.
Watch out for the other meanings of 以上: “more than, at least” (三人以上), “the above” (以上の理由で), and at the end of a presentation or list, 以上です “that's all”.
| Use | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb + 以上(は) | since, given that | 約束した以上、守る |
| Number + 以上 | at least, or more | 十八歳以上 |
| 以上の + N | the above, aforementioned | 以上の理由で |
| 以上です | that's all, end | 報告は以上です |
- 今日の報告は以上です。きょうのほうこくはいじょうです。That's all for today's report.
Common mistakes
- Confusing it with 以上 “more than” or “the above”: look at what comes before (a verb or である → “since”).
- Writing ×学生な以上: with a noun or a な-adjective, it's である以上.
- Ending with a neutral statement: what follows must draw a consequence (duty, will, judgement).
