Torn over whether to: 〜ようか〜まいか

Volitional verb + か + Verb (dictionary) + まいか + 迷う/考える/悩む

Volitional + か + same verb + まいか + 迷う/悩む: torn between doing and not doing. Written register; in speech, 〜か〜ないか.

In short

〜ようか〜まいか expresses hesitation between doing and not doing: “I can't decide whether to go or not”. You repeat the same verb, first in the volitional (行こう), then with まい (行くまい), and end with a verb of hesitation: 迷う, 悩む, 考える, ためらう. Written, narrative register; in speech, you'd rather say 行くか行かないか迷う.

  • 行こうか行くまいか迷っている。いこうかいくまいかまよっている。I can't decide whether to go or not.
  • 彼に本当のことを言おうか言うまいか、一晩中考えた。かれにほんとうのことをいおうかいうまいか、ひとばんじゅうかんがえた。I spent the whole night wondering whether to tell him the truth or not.
  • 会社をやめようかやめまいか、悩んでいる。かいしゃをやめようかやめまいか、なやんでいる。I'm agonising over whether to quit the company or not.

The basics

You put the two opposing intentions side by side: 〜よう (“I'll do it”) and 〜まい (“I won't do it”), each followed by か. The reader sees the character torn between the two. It's a narrative construction that describes an inner debate.

The sentence, piece by piece
行こうかgo? (volitional + か)
行くまいかnot go? (まい + か)
迷っているI'm torn

I can't decide whether to go or not.

  • verb
  • パーティーに出ようか出まいか、まだ決めていない。ぱーてぃーにでようかでまいか、まだきめていない。I still haven't decided whether to go to the party or not.

How to form it

The same verb twice: volitional + か, then the まい form + か. For group 2, まい attaches to the stem or the dictionary form. For the irregulars: しようかしまいか (or するまいか, すまいか), こようかこまいか.

VerbFormExample
行く (group 1)行こうか行くまいか行こうか行くまいか迷う
やめる (group 2)やめようかやめまいかやめようかやめまいか悩む
するしようかしまいか・しようかするまいか参加しようかしまいか
来るこようかこまいかこようかこまいか迷う
  • この仕事に応募しようかしまいか、ずっと迷っている。このしごとにおうぼしようかしまいか、ずっとまよっている。I've been going back and forth for ages over whether to apply for this job.
  • 電話をかけようかかけまいか、何度もためらった。でんわをかけようかかけまいか、なんどもためらった。I hesitated several times over whether to call.

An inner debate, in writing

The construction describes a personal, carefully weighed hesitation, often in a novel or a first-hand account. It's almost always followed by 迷う, 悩む, 考える, ためらう or 決められない. For a simple question of fact (“I don't know if he'll come”), you don't use ようか〜まいか: you say 来るかどうかわからない.

  • 彼が来るかどうか、まだわからない。かれがくるかどうか、まだわからない。I don't know yet whether he'll come. (simple fact)

ようか〜まいか and its neighbours

〜か〜ないか (行くか行かないか) says the same thing in a neutral, spoken tone. 〜かどうか (N4) asks a yes / no question, with no idea of hesitation. Finally, 〜ようが〜まいが (N1) means something quite different: “whether you do or not, it doesn't matter” (行こうが行くまいが、私の自由だ).

〜か〜ないかdo or not doneutral, spoken
〜かどうかwhether… or not (question)neutral
〜ようが〜まいがwhether… or not, it doesn't matter (N1)written
  • 行くか行かないか、早く決めて。いくかいかないか、はやくきめて。Are you going or not? Make up your mind.

Common mistakes

  • Changing verbs between the two halves: it's always the same verb (行こうか行くまいか).
  • Mixing up the forms: ×行くか行くまいか or ×行こうか行こうまいか. Volitional first, まい second.
  • Using it for a simple question of fact: there, it's かどうか.
