Beyond doubt: 〜に相違ない
plain form (N/な-adj without だ) + に相違ない
Plain form (N, な-adj without だ) + に相違ない: “beyond doubt”, the written, formal version of に違いない. 相違ありません certifies that a document is correct.
In short
〜に相違ない (にそういない) expresses a certainty based on evidence: “it's beyond doubt”. It's the written, formal version of 〜に違いない (N3). 相違 means “difference”: “there's no difference” → “it must be so”. You read it in detective novels, essays, documents. On official forms, 相違ありません certifies that the information is correct.
- これは彼の字に相違ない。これはかれのじにそういない。This is undoubtedly his handwriting.
- 犯人はこの近くに住む者に相違ない。はんにんはこのちかくにすむものにそういない。The culprit must be someone who lives nearby.
- 上記の通り相違ありません。じょうきのとおりそういありません。I certify that the above is correct.
The basics
相違 (そうい) means “difference, discrepancy”. So 〜に相違ない literally says “there's no discrepancy with…”: the conclusion is certain. Like に違いない, it's the speaker's deduction backed by evidence, but the tone is more serious, almost legal.
This is undoubtedly his handwriting.
- noun
- particle
- grammatical form
- これだけ準備したのだから、計画はうまくいくに相違ない。これだけじゅんびしたのだから、けいかくはうまくいくにそういない。With this much preparation, the plan is bound to succeed.
How to form it
The linking is the same as に違いない: plain form of the verb or い-adjective; nouns and な-adjectives directly, without だ. Polite: に相違ありません.
| Word | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb | plain form + に相違ない | 知っているに相違ない |
| い-adjective | 〜い + に相違ない | 高いに相違ない |
| な-adjective | stem + に相違ない | 不便に相違ない |
| Noun | N + に相違ない | 本物に相違ない |
| Polite / documents | 〜に相違ありません・相違ありません | 上記の通り相違ありません |
- 彼は何かを知っているに相違ない。かれはなにかをしっているにそういない。He must know something.
- この絵は本物に相違ありません。このえはほんものにそういありません。This painting is undoubtedly genuine.
Register: writing and documents
In speech, に相違ない sounds theatrical or old-fashioned: you'd say に違いない or きっと〜だ. It does, however, have its place in documents. At the bottom of a form, a declaration or a CV, you read 上記の通り相違ありません: “I certify that the above is correct”.
The noun 相違 is also used on its own: 意見の相違 (“difference of opinion”), 事実と相違する (“not match the facts”).
- 両者の間には、意見の相違がある。りょうしゃのあいだには、いけんのそういがある。There's a difference of opinion between the two parties.
に相違ない, に違いない, はずだ
に違いない (N3) is the everyday version, in speech and writing. はずだ (N4) deduces from logic or knowledge (“it should be, normally”). だろう is a simple guess, less certain.
| Form | Certainty | Register |
|---|---|---|
| 〜に相違ない | very strong, well-founded | very written, documents |
| 〜に違いない | very strong, well-founded | everyday |
| 〜はずだ | logical, expected | everyday |
| 〜だろう | guess | neutral |
- あの店はいつも混んでいるから、おいしいに違いない。あのみせはいつもこんでいるから、おいしいにちがいない。That restaurant is always packed, so it must be good.
Common mistakes
- Using it in ordinary conversation: in speech, say に違いない.
- Forgetting that 相違 means “difference”: 相違ありません doesn't vaguely mean “no mistake”, but “it matches, it's correct”.
- Putting だ before に: ×本物だに相違ない. It's 本物に相違ない.
