Probably won't, will never: 〜まい

Verb (dictionary, group 1) + まい ; group 2: stem or dictionary + まい ; する → するまい/すまい ; 来る → こまい/くるまい

Verb + まい: the negative volitional, either “probably won't” (conjecture) or “I'll never…” (resolution). Written register; watch the forms of する and 来る.

In short

まい is the negative of the volitional and of conjecture (〜う/〜よう). It has two meanings. 1) Negative conjecture: この雨はやむまい = やまないだろう, “it probably won't stop”. 2) Negative resolution: 二度と行くまい = 行かないつもりだ, “I'll never go again”. The context (who's talking about what, the presence of 二度と or 決して) settles which. Written, literary register, speeches.

  • 二度とあの店には行くまい。にどとあのみせにはいくまい。I'll never set foot in that restaurant again.
  • この雨は夜までやむまい。このあめはよるまでやむまい。This rain probably won't stop before evening.
  • 同じ失敗は繰り返すまいと心に決めた。おなじしっぱいはくりかえすまいとこころにきめた。I made up my mind not to repeat the same mistake.

The basics

The volitional 〜う/〜よう expresses an intention (行こう “let's go”) or, in writing, a conjecture (あろう “there probably is”). まい is its negative, with the same two values: “I won't do it” (resolution) and “it probably won't happen” (conjecture).

It's a classical form that survives in writing, in novels, editorials, speeches. In everyday speech, you say 〜ないつもりだ or 〜ないだろう.

How to form it

Group 1: dictionary form + まい. Group 2: stem or dictionary form + まい (食べまい, 食べるまい). The irregular verbs have several forms, all correct: する → するまい, すまい (and しまい); 来る → こまい, くるまい. With ある, you mostly meet ではあるまい / ではあるまいか.

行く (group 1)行くまいdictionary + まい
食べる (group 2)食べまい・食べるまいtwo forms

来るこまい・くるまいtwo readings

  • あんなに怒っていたのだから、彼はもうここへは来るまい。あんなにおこっていたのだから、かれはもうここへはくるまい。Given how angry he was, he probably won't come here again.
  • これは単なる事故ではあるまい。これはたんなるじこではあるまい。This is probably no ordinary accident.

Resolution or conjecture?

When the subject is “I” and you find 二度と, 決して or 〜と決めた / 〜と心に誓った, it's a resolution. When the subject is another person, a thing or a phenomenon (雨, 電車), it's a conjecture.

Two common turns of phrase: 〜まいと思う (“I intend not to…”, resolution) and 〜まいとする (“to try not to”). Finally, 〜ではあるまいか (“might it not be…?”) is a written way of saying ではないだろうか.

  • 子どもは泣くまいとして、口をぎゅっと結んだ。こどもはなくまいとして、くちをぎゅっとむすんだ。The child pressed their lips together, trying not to cry.
  • 彼は本当のことを知っているのではあるまいか。かれはほんとうのことをしっているのではあるまいか。Might he not know the truth?

まい and its everyday equivalents

For conjecture, the everyday equivalent is 〜ないだろう (N5); for resolution, 〜ないつもりだ (N4) or 〜ないようにする. まい is shorter and more solemn. Two constructions derive from it: 〜ようか〜まいか (“to be torn over whether to”, next point) and 〜ようが〜まいが (“whether… or not, it doesn't matter”, N1).

negative conjectureやむまいやまないだろう
negative resolution二度と行くまい二度と行かないつもりだ
try not to泣くまいとする泣かないようにする
cautious question〜ではあるまいか〜ではないだろうか
  • もうあの人とは会わないつもりだ。もうあのひととはあわないつもりだ。I don't intend to see that person again.

Common mistakes

  • Getting the irregular verbs wrong: with する, it's するまい or すまい; with 来る, こまい or くるまい.
  • Mixing up the two meanings: look at the subject and at words like 二度と (resolution) or an outside phenomenon (conjecture).
  • Using it in relaxed conversation: it's written and solemn; in speech, 〜ないつもり or 〜ないだろう.
