-ic, -al: 〜てき

Noun (Sino-Japanese) + 的 + な + Noun / 的に / 的だ

Sino-Japanese noun + 的 = な-adjective: social, economic, international… 的な + noun, 的に + verb or adjective; 的に(は) = in terms of.

In short

〜的 (read てき) turns a Sino-Japanese noun into a な-adjective: 社会 (society) → 社会的 (social), 経済 (economy) → 経済的 (economic). Like a な-adjective, it takes な before a noun and に before a verb or an adjective. 〜的に also means “in terms of”: 時間的に難しい.

  • 京都は国際的な観光地だ。きょうとはこくさいてきなかんこうちだ。Kyoto is an international tourist destination.
  • 最近、経済的に苦しい。さいきん、けいざいてきにくるしい。Things have been tight financially lately.
  • もっと具体的に説明してください。もっとぐたいてきにせつめいしてください。Please explain more concretely.
  • 個人的には、この計画に反対です。こじんてきには、このけいかくにはんたいです。Personally, I'm against this plan.

The basics

Japanese has few adjectives for abstract ideas. To say “social, economic, international, concrete”, it adds 的 to a Sino-Japanese noun (a word made of kanji read the Chinese way): it's the equivalent of English suffixes like “-ic” and “-al”.

The resulting word behaves exactly like a な-adjective. It's written with the kanji 的, which originally means “target”, and read てき.

The sentence, piece by piece
最近、lately

的にin terms of
苦しいit's hard, tough

Things have been tight financially lately.

  • noun
  • grammatical form
  • adjective
  • この町は、文化的にとても豊かだ。このまちは、ぶんかてきにとてもゆたかだ。This town is very rich culturally.
  • それは科学的な考え方ではない。それはかがくてきなかんがえかたではない。That's not a scientific way of thinking.

How to form it

Noun + 的, then the same endings as a な-adjective: な before a noun, に before a verb or an adjective, だ at the end of a sentence. With には, you specify a point of view (個人的には, “personally”).

FormPositionExample
〜的な + nounbefore a noun国際的な町
〜的に + verb / adj.adverb具体的に説明する
〜的だend of sentenceこの考え方は現実的だ
〜的にはpoint of view個人的には反対だ
  • 彼の考え方は、とても現実的だ。かれのかんがえかたは、とてもげんじつてきだ。His way of looking at things is very realistic.
  • この問題は、社会的に大きな問題になっている。このもんだいは、しゃかいてきにおおきなもんだいになっている。This has become a major social issue.

The most common 的 words

At N3, a dozen or so 的 words keep coming up in newspapers and serious conversations. Many translate as an English adjective in “-ic” or “-al”.

社会的しゃかいてきsocial
経済的けいざいてきeconomic, financial
国際的こくさいてきinternational
具体的ぐたいてきconcrete
文化的ぶんかてきcultural
科学的かがくてきscientific
現実的げんじつてきrealistic
世界的せかいてきworldwide
一時的いちじてきtemporary
個人的こじんてきpersonal
  • 京都のお寺は世界的に有名だ。きょうとのおてらはせかいてきにゆうめいだ。Kyoto's temples are world-famous.
  • 工事のため、この道は一時的に通れません。こうじのため、このみちはいちじてきにとおれません。Due to roadworks, this road is temporarily closed.

的, らしい, っぽい

的 describes a characteristic, often abstract and neutral. 〜らしい (covered later) says something has all the qualities expected of its category (男らしい, “manly”). 〜っぽい (covered later) says something resembles something else, often with a casual or pejorative nuance (子どもっぽい, “childish”).

FormIdeaExample
〜的characteristic, in terms of経済的な問題
〜らしいtrue to type京都らしい町並み
〜っぽいresembling (casual)子どもっぽい人

Common mistakes

  • Attaching 的 to a native Japanese word or to just any noun: “猫的” only exists as a casual joke. 的 goes with Sino-Japanese words (社会, 経済, 国際…).
  • Mixing up 的な and 的に: 的な + noun (経済的な問題), 的に + verb or adjective (経済的に苦しい).
  • Translating mechanically with “-ic” or “-al”: 経済的に苦しい means “to be hard up”, not “to be economically painful”.
