Making and letting: the causative form
Gr. 1: -u → -aseru(行かせる); Gr. 2: る → させる; する → させる, くる → こさせる
Causative: -aseru (group 1), -saseru (group 2), させる, こさせる. A は B に/を V-させる = A makes or lets B do it. 〜させて ください = let me do it.
In short
The causative form says you make someone do something (you force them) or let them do it (you allow it). 母は 子どもに やさいを 食べさせた: “the mother made her child eat vegetables”. 〜させて ください is used to ask permission to do something yourself.
- 母は 子どもに やさいを 食べさせました。ははは こどもに やさいを たべさせました。The mother made her child eat vegetables.
- 子どもには 好きな ことを させて あげたい。こどもには すきな ことを させて あげたい。I want to let my children do what they love.
- すみません、今日は 早く 帰らせて ください。すみません、きょうは はやく かえらせて ください。Excuse me, may I leave early today?
The basics
The causative form adds a second person to the action: someone (the subject) causes another person to act. Depending on the context, it's an obligation (“make someone do”) or a permission (“let someone do”) — English happens to have the very same pair.
The person who decides is the subject (は or が); the person who carries out the action takes に (or を, as we'll see).
The mother made her child eat vegetables.
- noun
- verb
- 子どもが やさいを 食べた。こどもが やさいを たべた。The child ate vegetables.
- 母が 子どもに やさいを 食べさせた。ははが こどもに やさいを たべさせた。The mother made the child eat vegetables.
How to form it
Group 1: last sound to “a” + せる (verbs ending in う give わ: 言う → 言わせる). Group 2: る → させる. する → させる, 来る → 来させる (こさせる). The resulting verb conjugates like a group 2 verb: 行かせない, 行かせた, 行かせて.
Careful: the causative of 見る is 見させる; 見せる (“to show”) is a different verb.
| Group | Dictionary | Causative | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
The teacher had the students write an essay.
- お待たせしました。おまたせしました。Sorry to have kept you waiting. (set phrase)
に or を for the person?
If the sentence already has an object with を (やさいを, 本を), the person carrying out the action takes に: two を are avoided. If the verb has no object (走る, 遊ぶ, 行く), the person takes を: 子どもを 外で 遊ばせる.
With a verb that has no object, に also exists: it stresses that you're letting the person do what they want. Start by remembering the rule “already a を → に”.
The causative is also used for emotions you cause: 友だちを 笑わせる (to make a friend laugh), 母を 心配させる (to worry your mother).
| Starting sentence | Causative sentence | Particle |
|---|---|---|
| 子どもが 遊ぶ | 子どもを 遊ばせる | を (no other object) |
| 学生が 本を 読む | 学生に 本を 読ませる | に (there's already 本を) |
| 友だちが 笑う | 友だちを 笑わせる | を (emotion caused) |
- コーチは 子どもたちを 走らせました。こーちは こどもたちを はしらせました。The coach made the children run.
- 彼は いつも みんなを 笑わせる。かれは いつも みんなを わらわせる。He always makes everyone laugh.
〜させて ください: asking permission
The most useful form in daily life: causative in て + ください. You're asking to be “let do” something: it's a very polite way to offer or to ask for permission. Even more polite: 〜させて いただけませんか.
Watch the register: you don't “make” a superior do anything. “先生に 〜させる” is unthinkable; ask them with 〜て いただけませんか.
- この 仕事は わたしに やらせて ください。この しごとは わたしに やらせて ください。Please let me take care of this job.
- 写真を とらせて いただけませんか。しゃしんを とらせて いただけませんか。Would you mind if I took a photo?
Common mistakes
- Getting the person's particle wrong: if there's already a を in the sentence, the person takes に (学生に 本を 読ませる).
- Mixing up させる (make do) and される (be done to, passive): 書かせる ≠ 書かれる.
- Using the causative towards a superior: “先生に 来させる” is very rude; ask with 来て いただけませんか.
- Mixing up 見させる (causative of 見る) and 見せる (to show).
